World Basketball Day: A’ja Wilson Gets Honest About Her Connection With Future of Basketball

Back in July 2025, the WNBA named A’ja Wilson as the first-ever Global Ambassador for the Jr. WNBA. And the 2x WNBA Champion recently reflected upon what it feels like to connect with the young fans, especially in communities where basketball is still growing.
"Connecting with youth in the future of this game, it's so near and dear to me because I was once in their position, literally not even knowing if I wanted to play basketball… and because I did, it allowed me to be the person that I am today."
While you're young, you look at a lot of options, and who would know that better than A'ja Wilson? Her parents enrolled her in art, dance, and piano, as well as tennis, swimming, soccer, track, volleyball, and basketball.
The 3x MVP actually hated basketball. But it was her father who pushed, and she eventually turned to rule the sport to a point where she could be a voice for the fans.
"The future generation, the future as a whole, it's so bright, and I don't ever want to dim that light," she said in an interview.
The WNBA star has advocated for a safe space where the future WNBA stars can perform at a high level with a deserving salary. She is even making dreams come true.
A'ja Wilson made a 4-year-old's dream come true
Iman Taylor had one big wish: to meet Aj'a Wilson. So, days before his 5th birthday, the 4-year-old was present at “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” and Hudson made sure of an early birthday gift for the fan.
Asking Taylor if she could give him a present, Hudson called out the WNBA star herself. Taylor, who only knew that he was there to talk about his favorite WNBA star, was surprised and rushed ahead to hug her, bringing his mom, Bianca Taylor, to tears.
Wilson also gave Taylor a birthday present- a signed jersey and a pair of her signature A’One sneakers. She also told him that she wanted him to “remember this moment every time he laces them up.”
