‘Welcome Back’: Fans React as Caitlin Clark’s Teammate Returns

Keeping eyes on May, the Indiana Fever has major work to do. But the fans probably wouldn’t have to be accustomed to a lot of new stuff.

Before the free agency officially tips off on Saturday, the franchise pretty much figured out its roster plan. And now, they’re reportedly eyeing another familiar name to bring back on the roster, and Underdog WNBA took it to X.

“Damiris Dantas to sign with the Fever, per @robertawbb”, their caption read. While Roberta’s original post stated, “Damiris Dantas is set to re-sign with the Indiana Fever, a source tells me. Announcement to come this weekend.”

Being in the league since 2014, this Brazilian star signed a two-year, $197,100 deal with the Fever ahead of 2024. In these two seasons, she has been an important bench player, averaging 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds.

For now, Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Mikayla Timpson are under contract with the team. Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell also received the extended qualifying offers. And Dantas is probably the next.

But before any official announcement takes place on Saturday, fans crowded the comments section of Underdog WNBA's X update to take the conversation further.

How did Fans React to Damiris Dantas’ Return?

Despite playing 10 seasons in the league, Dantas shone the brightest in international competitions. She won gold medals in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup in 2011 and 2023. She also dominated the W league in free-throw percentage. So, some fans were certainly happy about her return.

“Welcome back, dd”, wrote one. Another said, “While '25 was not her best szn, I am hoping she will recover to her historical mean of 19 mins, 7 ppg, and 33% from 3s, with her shares of dagger + clutch 3s.”

One fan highlighted how Dantas fits well with the Fever’s Front Office and the current salary cap. In fact, they put together the detailed amount, putting things in perspective.

“I am very happy for Damiris. She's a loyal soldier who's underappreciated. For her 12 min/game, she is a good value for a vet min of $300k – with only $277,500 counted against cap. So that's like getting a $22.5K discount for the front office.”

However, many disagreed with this. Despite a good first season with the Fever, Dantas’ game fumbled massively last year. Fans said she doesn’t match Clark’s play, and the Fever will repeat the same year if she’s in.

“Too slow to run, too timid/weak to guard a real post player, inconsistent with her outside shot. Is a big for nothing 3 and no D forward the best the Fever can do in FA?” a fan wrote. Another added, “I want young, fast pace offensive with CC’s system. Dantas can’t run at all. Too slow.”

Now, whether this signing actually takes place or not, Saturday will tell.

But for now, do you think DD is a good choice for the Fever? Let us know in the comments.
