The Los Angeles Sparks opened their season with a brutal 105-78 loss to the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, and Cameron Brink’s limited 8-minute 3-second appearance quickly became a major talking point.
Lynne Roberts issued a direct ultimatum to Brink after the season-opening loss.
“We need Cameron Brink to produce. We need Cam to bring that defensive energy,” Roberts said during the post-game press conference.
And the challenge ahead for Brink already looks massive. While the Aces had 5 players score in double figures on Sunday, in that 105–78 win, the five players were Chennedy Carter [22], Jackie Young [20], A’ja Wilson [19], Chelsea Gray [16], and NaLyssa Smith [12].
The Sparks relied heavily on Kelsey Plum’s 27 points and Nneka Ogwumike’s 19 in the lopsided loss.
Still, Roberts made it clear, “We have so much confidence and belief in her. She’s got to get out on the floor with confidence and do what she’s capable of doing, but we’re going to need her."
In her limited eight minutes on the court, Brink struggled to make an impact. The 6-foot-4 forward finished with 0 points, 3 rebounds, 3 turnovers, and 3 fouls while posting a -19 plus-minus.
To be fair, Brink is still working her way back after tearing her ACL during her rookie season. But Roberts also made it clear that fitness and foul trouble were not the main reasons behind her difficult night.
Roberts challenged Brink to play with greater aggression. After all, there is a reason she was selected right behind Caitlin Clark during the 2024 draft.
“Part of the beginning of the season is figuring out rotations, chemistry, and all those things. We looked like we didn’t have a lot of floor chemistry out there. The Las Vegas Aces did. We’re going to need Cam. She’s going to be a big part of our success, and we have every bit of belief in her,” Roberts added.
Brink remains central to the Sparks' defensive strategy. But based on Sunday’s performance, it may take some time before everything fully comes together.
Why Cameron Brink’s Biggest Strength Is Suddenly Becoming a Problem
There has already been a lot of discussion around the WNBA’s new freedom-of-movement focus and reduced physicality, and the impact is showing up quickly in the foul numbers.
The games between the Storm and Liberty and the Dallas Wings and Indiana Fever together produced 61 fouls, whereas the Mercury and Sky game resulted in 58 fouls.
The league showed an average of 34.8 fouls per game last season, which has increased to 44.06 fouls in the current season, according to early-season statistics.
That shift means Cameron Brink will need time to adjust.
Her primary strength has always been her ability to protect the rim because she stands 6 feet 4 inches tall and possesses a wingspan of 6 feet 8 inches.
Brink left Stanford as the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, and her shot-blocking ability immediately stood out during her rookie season.
Brink recorded at least 2 blocks in each of her first 6 regular-season games as a pro, including 5 blocks against the Aces and 4 in a win over the Mystics.
But with the league now calling contact more tightly, Brink’s aggressive defensive style is naturally leading to more fouls, including the 3 she picked up in limited minutes against Las Vegas.
Adjusting to the new rules will take time, especially since defensive habits built over the years do not disappear overnight.
The Sparks expect Brink to reclaim her role as a dual-threat force once she adjusts.
