Vanderbilt Star Threatens Caitlin Clark’s Sophomore Scoring Mark

While Mikayla Blakes keeps pushing the Vanderbilt Commodores to their historic run, a new individual feat has pitched her up against Caitlin Clark.
On March 2, the 20-year-old sophomore Guard helped the Commodores secure a 87-77 win over the Tennessee Lady Vols by racking up 34 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. But I talk Hoops’ recent X post broke down the real staggering numbers.
“Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes is currently averaging (27.10) points per game, the highest mark ever by a sophomore from a Power 4 conference in women’s college basketball history”, the post read. Adding Clark and Kelsey Mitchell’s stats that were 26.96 PPG and 26.15 PPG, respectively.
Clark’s NCAA record numbers are no joke. During her sophomore year with the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2021-22 period, she averaged 26.96. And Mitchell averaged the aforementioned number for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2015-16.
But Blakes’ new run has placed both these icons’ numbers in jeopardy. Moreover, this is not the only domain in which she crossed Clark's elite leadership.
Mikayla Blakes Surpassed Caitlin Clark’s Consecutive 30-Point Game Streak
In 2023, a 21-year-old Clark recorded four consecutive 30-point games against top-25 teams, which was the longest streak in NCAA women’s basketball since the 2021–2022 season. However, Blakes has not only surpassed it, but she has recorded something even longer.
The Commodores No. 1’s 30-game streak began on Feb 2. And ever since, she has recorded 30-points or more in 7 games, against top 25 teams like Florida, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, and now the Lady Vols, which marked the 7th of the run.
However, this individual feat’s magnitude doesn’t settle in for Blakes, who keeps her focus and priority on the team win rather than her own stats. And Coach Shea Ralph has talked about this after the Commodores’ last game against Alabama.
“The only thing that she cares about is winning. So, if she has to score 50 for us to win, she will. If it's three and we win, she's fine”, she said. “So that's why she has no idea. But if we don't win, then you're going to see a different side of her”.
Moving forward, Vanderbilt will take the paint on March 7, against opponents that are yet to be decided. Regardless of that, do you think Blakes will be able to maintain her streak? Comment it down.
