UConn’s Azzi Fudd Is Making a Case to Be WNBA’s No. 1 Pick

Jan 1, 2026, 11:35 AM CUT

Azzi Fudd was eligible for the 2025 draft and had every reason to declare it.

Yet, she chose to return to UConn for a fifth season to prove herself. And that decision was worth it, as it has changed her trajectory. Now, she’s firmly in the conversation to become the No. 1 overall pick.

Last season, Fudd was impressive and played a key role in UConn’s title run. This year, she’s been explosive. After Paige Bueckers left for the Wings, Fudd took on the responsibility of carrying the team. And she delivered.

As one of only two players averaging double figures while shooting 50/50/100 splits, she’s the only player ranked nationally in both three-pointers made per game and three-point shooting percentage. On top of that, she has recorded the most 20-point performances against ranked opponents.

Her production against elite competition stands out even more. Her 23.8 points per game against four ranked teams mark the highest by any player this season. Also, she’s one of only six players nationwide to record 30 or more steals and 30 or more made three-pointers.

So quite visible, she has evolved, and in the best way possible. But the story doesn’t end here because she could be a perfect fit for Wings too!

How Azzi Fudd Makes a Strong Case with the Dallas Wings?

The Wings hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 season, putting them in position to secure back-to-back top selections. If Fudd goes No. 1, it could be a golden opportunity. That’s because Wings struggled badly from beyond the arc last season. They ranked 10th in three-point attempts at 21.6 per game and 12th in three-point percentage.

That too when they had PB as their offensive weapon. The 2025 Rookie of the Year hold the record for securing 44 points against the LA Sparks, the highest single-game total of the season. So, by adding Fudd, everything could be changed.

The two already share strong on-court chemistry from their time together at UConn. As the Wings look to improve spacing around Bueckers so having an elite shooter could make them far more dangerous.

Still, nothing is guaranteed. As Fudd faces stiff competition from UCLA’s Lauren Betts and Notre Dame’s Olivia Miles, both of whom are also making strong cases at the top of the draft.
