Trinity Rodman just made USWNT history. She became the youngest player to captain the national team in 25 years. Her debut in the role ended with a goal and a dominant 6-0 win over Paraguay.

The friendly was a perfect time for Rodman to shine in the absence of the usual team leaders. Following back and knee injuries, Rodman had not played for the national team since April’s friendly against Brazil.

Talking about the game, Rodman said, "In the first half, there was definitely nerves. We were rushing a lot. I think there was almost too much space that we were overthinking things."

However, in the second half, the USWNT opened with a barrage of goals. Even Rodman joined in on the action. Rodman scored her first goal as captain just minutes into the second half, sealing a memorable moment in front of her hometown supporters at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Coach Emma Hayes recognized the hard work. "She’s ready to move forward, which I think today symbolizes that. Like, it’s a fresh year, it’s a fresh start for her. She’s settled. She’s happy. I think knowing her future is a big weight off of her shoulders."

Rodman's rise and what it means for Team USA

Before her captaincy debut, she signed a three-year deal with the Washington Spirit worth more than $2 million per year. The deal has shattered National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) records.

Additionally, Reilyn Turner, who made her USWNT debut, scored from an assist by Olivia Moultrie, becoming the 25th player to score on her debut for the national team.

With the new leadership role and a young team, Rodman looks ready to take on more responsibility ahead of the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The USWNT will go up against Chile on January 27th in Santa Barbara.
