Toronto Tempo Draws Sell-Out Crowd in Inaugural Game

Although Toronto Tempo did not get lucky in their inaugural game against the Connecticut Sun, they certainly witnessed massive support in the stadium.

On April 29, the scoreboard at the Coca Cola Coliseum stood at 83-78, much to the Tempo’s distress. However, a sell-out crowd indicated what was coming next, while Sports Business Journal broke down the news.

“The @TempoBasketball opened with a sellout in their first-ever game,” a recent Sports Business Journal report read. It also said, “Normalcy reigned for the preseason bout against the Sun, which drew a sellout crowd of 8,210. Fans waited in long lines for merchandise ahead of the game…”

The historic stadium that the Tempo will be calling home, “slowly filled in anticipation of tip-off.” And the sell-out crowd witnessed Tempo’s Lexi Held racking up 21 points. While the Only Canadian player, Kia Nurse, added 8.

Nurse shot Tempo’s first bucket and also received the honour of being announced last. In fact, the hype stretched beyond the game when a pre-game hype video showed several behind-the-scenes moments earlier.

The video ended with the slogan, “The Future Starts Now.” And seeing this massive surge, the coach had to join the conversation.

Sandy Brondello Expresses Her Feelings About the Support for the Tempo

The crowd thickened with fans looking for Tempo goods, including jerseys, sweaters, hats, and tall insulated mugs. And seeing this kind of hype, coach Brondello couldn’t hold back from expressing her feelings.

“I feel like a kid in a candy store,” she said. Highlighting what her and the team’s goal would be, Brondello also added, “We want to make teams feel uncomfortable.” Her direct implication was that the Tempo will be disruptive on the defensive end.

Moreover, she mentioned how the players are gelling in seamlessly. She said, “They’re doing things together off the court too, they’re getting to know each other on a personal level.” Her punchline was, “We’re making history, aren’t we?”

Moving forward, how much do you think this newborn team will be able to live up to the hype and expectations? Comment it down.
