“This Is Ridiculous”: Geno Auriemma Calls Out Officiating After Final Four Loss

UConn's season ended in the Final Four. But it was coach Geno Auriemma's furious reaction to the officiating that stole the show. His post-game comments are now making headlines.
South Carolina finally broke UConn's 54-game winning streak. During a post-match interview with ESPN and then got into a heated argument with Staley in the final seconds of their 62-48 loss to the Gamecocks.
“There were six fouls called that quarter — all of them against us. And they’ve been beating the s*** out of our guys down there the entire game. I’m not making excuses, ’cause we haven’t been able to make a shot. But this is ridiculous." Geno Auriemma said.
The UConn HC followed his displeasure by not shaking hands with any of the Gamecocks, but his frustration was not only caused by the opposition.
The Huskies were absolutely abysmal offensively, as the All-American duo of Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd had a disappointing night.
Fudd's last-ever game with the Huskies ended with her scoring eight on 3-of-15 shooting, including 2 of 9 from long range. Strong finished with just 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
It was a physical game. UConn was whistled for 17 fouls, while South Carolina was called for eight.
“Their coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referee some names you don’t want to hear. And now we get 6 to 0, and I got a kid with a ripped jersey, and they go, ‘I didn’t see it.’ Come on, man. It’s for a national championship.” Geno Auriemma added that Strong's jersey was seen ripped off by the end of the game.
Sarah Strong Forced to Change Jerseys in the Fourth Quarter
The 72-year-old HC was not the only Husky left visibly frustrated. The Naismith Player of the Year, Sarah Strong, showcased those emotions on the baseline while tearing her No. 21 jersey apart.
It’s unclear if her jersey was torn a bit before that. She made a bigger tear, however, and switched jerseys to wear a generic No. 55 the rest of the way.
From Geno Auriemma crashing out to Strong ripping her jersey apart, it was one of the worst ways for a team of Huskies' stature to go out.
The 38-1 team will now have to watch the national championship game from their homes.
