“Thank Refs?” Fans Erupt Over Officiating as UConn Wins 54th Straight Game

2026 is totally the UConn Huskies’ year. The stats say it, the record does, and so does ESPN. But then it comes to some fans, who aren’t singing the same tune.
Geno Auriemma’s squad has entered the Final 4 for the 25th time in program history, beating Notre Dame in a 70-52 upset on March 29. But all the while the 38-0 record shines brightly, ESPNW has highlighted the Huskies’ other feat.
“POV: You just won your 54th straight game. The Huskies are headed to the Final Four”, their official X post’s caption read. Attached to it was a video that showed the players posing for photos in an unserious manner.
And such “unbeaten” status isn’t really a new thing for the Huskies, who have caught the tournament by storm and are playing as the defending champions. But a few fans have gone very vocal about the officiating matters.
Mixed Reaction Followed on X
It's not new for the Huskies to get remarks like they play easier teams, or manage the matchups, or control officiations. All these are arguably pretty common things to hear for teams with flawless seasons. And some fans have said exactly that.
“Yeah, make sure you thank the refs. That game was called extremely one-sided. Horrible. All games up until today have been called well, but today they dropped the ball. God forbid a team challenges UConn”, wrote a fan. While another wrote, “Make sure the refs get a shirt and trophy too!”
The sarcasm was top-notch, but another fan went a step further. They criticised the “officiating bias” while indirectly saying that Auriemma has bought the game, and calling out ESPN as well. Mainly due to the celebratory caption.
“Congrats for your investment in preserving the 6th participant on the court. Again, the ESPN and officiating BIAS is out for the world to see. Geno had it again in his budget to “donate”, they wrote. While another added, “Worst 2 games of the year.”
Meanwhile, some fans genuinely congratulated the team for their win, mentioning that the Huskies being in the Final 4 has a nice ring to it. A fan even directly countered the previous officiation-related comment.
“UConn got called for the same EXACT number of fouls as Notre Dame...now what?”, said one. Another added, “Final Four Huskies sounds about right.” “I’m not a die-hard fan, but they are fun to watch and tough as nails, congrats”, wrote another.
Whether the Huskies actually earned their spot by their own merit or there was bias will be disclosed as the games get even more intense.
But with that being said, what do you think it was?
