“Taxpayers Can Afford It”: UConn Fans Fire Back Over $99M Arena Upgrade Plan

As the UConn Huskies chase more titles, the university is investing $99 million to upgrade its home arena.

News of the upgrades were shared by Front Office Sports on X, with a caption that read, "UConn has announced $99M in upgrades to its home basketball arena, Gampel Pavilion."

The multi-phase project, led by DPR Construction with S/L/A/M Collaborative heading the design, is being funded through $99.4 million in non-tax revenue generated from the sale of General Assembly-authorized “UConn 2000” bonds.

Renovations are already underway, and Phase 1 is moving fast with a target completion set for November this year. This phase includes a full roof replacement along with a brand-new Basketball Gameday Suite.

The suite will feature a modern recruiting lounge, sports medicine space, and updated locker rooms for both the team and coaches.

It will also include a coaches’ lounge, conference room, upgraded officials’ locker room, and a fully integrated post-game press and meeting space.

For fans, the concession stands at all four corners of the bowl will be replaced with grab-and-go options. The goal is to ease congestion around food areas and nearby restrooms.

Phase 2 is expected to begin around this time next year and will focus on premium gameday spaces. It is also expected to add upgrades like a student-athlete training table and nutrition space.

While many students at the Storrs campus are excited about the upgrades, not everyone is convinced, as some feel that the money should have gone toward more urgent needs.

The Mixed Responses to the UConn Home Court Upgrades

“Why not? Connecticut taxpayers can afford it,” one user wrote, pointing to the UConn Tax Credit Program, which gives a 50% state tax credit on donations to the university.

Another fan took a bigger-picture view, saying, “Back-to-back national champions. $99M arena upgrade. UConn is building a program that outlasts the trophies.”

“Sounds like expensive ticket prices,” another user joked. Their concern does make sense to an extent, as major upgrades can sometimes lead to higher costs for fans, though it’s not always guaranteed.

One sports fan raised a different point, asking, “Why don’t they eliminate all that and charge less for tuition?”

While it’s a fair question, the funding comes from specific bonds and donation-based programs, which are typically separate from tuition budgets.

On top of that, training and development for professional athletes, including those aiming for leagues like the WNBA, require significant resources, facilities, and support systems, so the comparison isn’t exactly one-to-one.

Another user added a more practical criticism, saying, "The only criticism I’ve ever had of Gampel is that it is an Amityville Horror nightmare trying to get in and out on game day."

That kind of feedback ties directly into some of the planned upgrades aimed at improving overall flow and experience.

At the end of the day, with the UConn Huskies continuing to dominate and showing no signs of slowing down, the expansion of Gampel Pavilion, to enhance the fan experience feels like a logical step.
