As the South Carolina Gamecocks delivered a 96-55 victory over Providence, the main focus was not the win. Seminoles transfer Ta'Niya Latson went down with a lower leg injury in the 2nd quarter.

As she was helped off the court, unable to put weight on the injured leg, the sight became a matter of concern. But coach Dawn Staley had some optimistic words post-game.

“She’s smiling,” Staley said. “She got treatment all through the second half.”

The No. 3 team overall (1st in the SEC) is looking for a championship run this season, and losing its second-highest scorer (17.4 PPG) is not what the team needs.

Though the Gamecocks won with a good margin, Latson’s absence was felt as the team’s most dependable offensive option. She only managed 10 points before being away. With South Carolina, Latson has been averaging 3.7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game with a 51 FG% and an 82.5 free-throw rate.

Dawn Staley's squad will soon be preparing for the SEC conference, and she confirmed that Ta'Niya Latson will be re-evaluated on Monday to check if she can be a part of the SEC play. This would be her first time playing in the SEC after 3 seasons in the ACC with Florida State.

Latson was the leading point scorer in the conference and the NCAA D-I with Florida last season averaging 25.2 PPG.

Eyes on the SEC for the Gamecocks

Latson’s injury has come at a crucial point as the team prepares to take on Alabama on January 1st. If she misses time, Dawn Staley will have to rely on the bench for scoring options.

But she has a backup in French freshman Alicia Tournebize. The 6 '7 center committed to the team during the holiday break and will be joining them sometime in January, though she has not reported to campus yet.

More recently, Jerzy Robinson also announced her commitment to the school.

South Carolina is one of the elites in the SEC, but without their core scorer, uncertainty looms even for high-ranked teams like the Gamecocks. Until the status of her injury is confirmed, the celebration of the win to Providence takes a back seat.

Do you think Ta'Niya Latson will be back before the SEC kicks in?
