WNBA and motherhood haven’t ever been too far apart. And this time, Dearica Hamby takes the paint to the bookshelves with her daughter.

On February 6, 2026, the Los Angeles Sparks star will release a children’s book she co-authored with her daughter, Amaya. The duo will be sharing their story in My Mom, the MVP.

The idea to write a book came in the middle of a plane ride. And soon, the mother-daughter had their framework. The book tells the story from Amaya’s perspective about what it is like to have a mother who’s a WNBA star. It also delves into all the struggles, achievements, and realities that come with it.

The pair was assisted by Elo, an AI-based app for children’s reading, to create their co-authored book. After learning about Hamby and her daughter's venture, multiple WNBA stars, including DeWanna Bonner, Natisha Hiedeman, and Lexie Hull, voiced their appreciation. Even tennis star Coco Gauff showed her support for Amaya’s authorship.

Hamby’s performance in the Unrivaled league has been groundbreaking. She had a career-high 40 points this season. However, the bond she shares with her daughter makes them both winners off the court, too.

However, motherhood itself has been an integral part of the Sparks.

Emma Cannon and Dearica Hamby as the Mothers in Sparks

After Odyssey Sims and Maria Kliundikova left the Sparks, Hamby and Cannon filled in their spot as the mothers on the team's roster, balancing their athleticism and motherhood.

Hamby, who averaged 18.4 points and 7.9 rebounds in the last season, was one of the few players to return to the court after having two children.

As for Canon, who has three children, motherhood is beautiful despite the struggles. She said, "They changed me, made me a better person,” Cannon said. “Life without them is crazy to even imagine. I’m grateful enough to even be called a mother."

And Sparks Coach Lynne Roberts realizes the pressures these athletes face and hence said, "They’ve got to do it all the time, and juggling being a mom, I’m in awe of them."

But despite all the adversities, it’s the outcome that matters. These mothers are ruling the hardwood while nurturing the bonds they have.

The Sparks had a decent season last year, despite being knocked out of the playoffs. What kind of play do you think they will put up this season? Let us know in the comments.
