With free agency looming, Sophie Cunningham faced a key decision on her future, and on Sunday, she chose to return to the Indiana Fever, following it up with a bold message that quickly caught attention.

According to ESPN's veteran reporter Alexa Philippou, Cunningham has signed a one-year extension with the Indiana Fever, as the franchise quickly moved to secure the 29-year-old free agent’s future for another year.

“We had a really special group last year, and it was an incredible first season for me in Indy; I loved everything about my teammates and the Fever organization,” Cunningham said in a report released on the Indiana Fever’s official website.

The Fever No. 8 also added, “We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started," she further added.

It wasn’t an easy run for Sophie Cunningham, who was traded before the 2025 season and quickly brought energy to the team before suffering a season-ending injury on August 17 against the Connecticut Sun.

Before the injury, she played 30 games, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, while shooting an impressive 43% from three-point range.

Even after missing the rest of the season, she still finished fourth on the Indiana Fever in both scoring and rebounds, with her 43.2% from three leading the team and ranking third in the WNBA.

That’s why she believes, "I have a feeling this is going to be another special season, so I'm excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!”

Following her signing with the Fever, Cunningham will be rejoining Lexie Hull and Caitlin Clark, keeping the “Tres Leches” core intact as the Fever will look to lift the title riding on their back.

With that core intact and Kelsey Mitchell signing a supermax deal, the Fever have managed to retain all their key players heading into the new season.

Fever General Manager, Amber Cox, placed her trust in Cunningham, which led to her retention. After cracking the deal, she said, “I think she’s always willing to step in and do whatever it takes to win."

“…When you have a shooter like Sophie – somebody who’s consistently at the top of the league every single year in terms of her effectiveness from beyond the arc – that really helps everybody else too…,” she further added.

And the 54-year-old is spot on, as Sophie Cunningham’s versatility, toughness on the wing, and commitment to the team make her a key asset for the Indiana Fever.
