Sophia Wilson Marks Return With a Goal Following Maternity Leave

While the Portland Thorns snatched a win right under Angel City FC’s clutch, Sophia Wilson proved 541 days could limit her, but not stop her masterclass play.

When the scoreboard stood at 1-1 with an urgent need for an insurance goal, Wilson’s left foot did the magic. And coming freshly off her maternity leave, nothing could have been a better comeback than that.

“SOPHIA WILSON WITH HER FIRST GOAL BACK SINCE MATERNITY LEAVE”, ESPNW’s celebratory X post read on April 27. And more than the goal or 2-1 win, the limelight was stolen by the moment after, as the whole team celebrated Wilson’s feat.

In the 95th minute, Wilson received a long pass from teammate Mimi Alidou. Next thing, a fierce Wilson made her way to the left side of the field, going for a 1v1 against Angel FC’s goalkeeper, Angelina Anderson.

In the blink of an eye, Wilson’s left-footed shot dived straight into the opposite low corner. What followed was an emotional group hug, the team celebrating Wilson’s first NWSL goal since November 1, 2024.

A visibly emotional Wilson didn’t forget to blow some kisses to the audience, holding up a heart. And once everything was said and done, the player outlined the density of the moment.

Sophia Wilson “Really Needed” This Moment

In the entire 2025, Wilson stayed out of the field, and welcomed her daughter Gianna Capri Wilson in September. And postgame, she opened up about the impact of the moment, savouring the taste of the return.

"It was definitely a long time coming. I tried not to put too much pressure on myself, just coming back and playing at this level,” she said. “But I really needed a goal with them, being completely honest. I think once I get one, hopefully more will come, but I'm really proud of our team."

Where most would’ve called it quits, Wilson refused to return quietly. While she’s the reason behind the Thorns’ 2-1 victory, can you recall more moments of resilience of your favourite athletes? Let us know in the comments.
