“Serious Concern”: Kelsey Plum, Breanna Stewart Raise Key Issues in WNBPA CBA Negotiations

The WNBA's CBA negotiations have hit a critical point. Star players Kelsey Plum and Breanna Stewart sent a private letter to union leadership expressing 'serious concern' over a lack of communication, escalating tensions just days before a key deadline.

In it, they wrote about "a changed dynamic between our PA administrators and the players," and that they, "do not feel like we have an adequate seat at the table in these negotiations."

“But we are frustrated that we have not made more progress as we near the March 10 deadline,” they wrote. “And we believe this is a result of a breakdown in communication between you and the Executive Committee and players more broadly.”

Failing to reach an agreement by March 10th would create significant complications for the start of the season. The league still needs to conduct the collegiate draft, a two-team expansion draft, and free agency involving more than 100 players. But that's not the only problem.

According to Stewie, they first saw a proposal in January. Since then, they’ve “repeatedly” requested more information from PA staff but have not received it.

“Despite a year and a half of negotiations, we have not been meaningfully engaged,” the letter read.

At the core, players are asking for clarity. They want detailed information about the league’s full revenues and expenses. They want transparency around licensing revenue distribution. They also want to understand the financial implications of a potential strike. Simply put, they want full visibility before making major decisions.

As a result, Stewart and Plum also requested a meeting of the executive committee within 24 hours to review the information.

Did It Happen?

While the union declined to comment publicly, ESPN reported that the WNBPA held a call with players Tuesday evening. During the call, leadership addressed the concerns raised by Stewart and Plum.

They also discussed results from a recent player survey about the league’s latest CBA proposal. Well, the urgency is clear. The two sides remain stuck on revenue-sharing issues, while the regular season is scheduled to begin May 8.

A strike remains an option, but it would ultimately hurt both sides. The clock is ticking, and the question is simple: Will they reach a deal in time?
