Just a month after shaving her long curly hair to raise awareness for alopecia in support of her best friend, Sunniva Ferri, Satou Sabally surprised her fans with a new look.

Satou Sabally recently began wearing goggles during practices. But she’s recently started using goggles during New York Liberty practices and says they’ve made a clear difference. So why the change now?

Earlier today on X, women’s sports reporter Madeline Kenney shared comments from Satou Sabally about her new glasses.

“I’m part of the glasses community now... I see it as a representation of young girls who have to wear glasses now. It’s so expensive, and fortunately, I’m in a position to afford that, but it is very different," Sabally said.

And yes, sports glasses can be pricey, with prescription pairs costing $100 to $300+ and basic training goggles around $12 to $20, depending on the type. We don’t know exactly which ones she’s using, but it gives an idea of the cost.

Sabally noted that the eyewear has significantly improved her clarity on the court.

"Honestly, it’s a very different experience as a person to rely on something, but it’s been good, it’s been a very helpful tool, and I feel like I can see sharper,” she added.

As for why she’s wearing them now, Satou Sabally suffered a serious concussion in Game 3 of the 2025 WNBA Finals with the Phoenix Mercury, which led to months of lingering symptoms and forced her to miss time, including the Unrivaled league.

Vision issues like blur and focus problems are common after such injuries, so while she hasn’t directly confirmed it, the glasses likely help with her recovery.

With her recovery on track, Sabally is now focused on her upcoming season in New York.

While her look has changed, her drive hasn’t. Satou Sabally was recently welcomed with loud cheers at the Brooklyn Basketball Training Center.

She spent time with kids, taking photos, signing autographs, and running drills with them.

“It’s honestly wonderful for me to be able to do my media day here and then to see what actually goes on as a pro,” the 27-year-old said.

“Just to be able to run around a little bit with them, sweating for my actual workout. I knew a part of me was going to be competitive, so it was good for them to see it,” she added.

The 27-year-old forward helped Phoenix get to the WNBA Finals last season by beating New York in the first round. During Game 3, she got a concussion and couldn't play in the last game of the series.

With that, she now seems ready to get to work with the New York Liberty and hopes to win a title, the one thing she feels is missing from her career.
