San Diego Wave FC Star's Emotional Exit Rocks Offseason Plans

San Diego Wave FC has had a rocky NWSL offseason. Key players have departed the club, and now they've announced the mutual departure of star forward and MVP finalist Delphine Cascarino after a two-season stint.
The Wave released an official statement where the French forward expressed her gratitude, saying, "Since joining the Wave, every moment of my time in San Diego is something I will always cherish. Playing for this Club, this city, and in front of such a passionate fan base made this decision incredibly difficult.”
She joined the club in 2024, signing a contract that ran through 2026. However, the decision to leave doesn't stem from any problems with the club.
"Due to personal considerations, the next step in my career needs to be closer to home at this time. I am grateful to the Wave for their understanding and support, and I will always look back on my time in San Diego with pride and appreciation," Cascarino said.
San Diego Wave FC's Sporting Director, Camille Ashton, also addressed the departure. “Delphine has been an important part of the group since joining the Club, and this was not an easy moment for anyone involved," Ashton said. "From the outset, we understood that if returning closer to home ever became a priority for Delphine, we would approach that situation with care and respect."
Losing one of its brightest stars is a significant blow to the club. In 2025, Cascarino tallied 5 goals and 6 assists, becoming a finalist for the MVP award. She made 34 appearances through 2024-25 for the Wave. However, she's not the only one who has left.
The Wave now prepares for the 2026 NWSL season
In addition to Delphine Cascarino, goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan left, mutually terminating her contract in December 2025. Midfielder Savannah McCaskill left for Gotham FC in early January 2026, and defender Hanna Lundkvist departed during the offseason.
So, the club has signed midfielder/defender Kiki Pickett to a 2-year contract. The former Stanford standout brings experience and versatility after the departure of McCaskill and Cascarino. They have also signed 31-year-old Brazilian Ludmila Silva and goalkeeper Leah Freeman.
Reports suggest that Cascarino’s next destination seems to be in the WSL with the London City Lionesses. Cascarino and San Diego Wave both look for new beginnings ahead of the 2026 season.
