Project B has finally provided an update about their multi-continent-wide tournament, but its schedule might clash with the potential WNBA schedule for 2026.
Project B first announced its idea of hosting the tournament in mid-November. However, they took almost two months to reveal their next move.
An X update from the Front Office Sports reporter, Annie Costabile, disclosed that the first edition of the Project B tournament would be held in Tokyo from March 26 to April 4.
"Project B just announced Tokyo as its first confirmed tour stop. Dates: March 26-April 4. WNBA training camp began April 27 last year and as we know one of the proposals being discussed in CBA negotiations is an earlier start date."
However, Costabile's update also highlighted a significant issue regarding Project B's planned window to host the tournament.
Project B's tournament schedule may clash with the WNBA's training season timings, as the season can start early this year (before April 27). Preponing the start of the training season by a month will put it in direct competition with Project B's tournament.
On the other hand, the WNBA's CBA negotiations and free agency are at a standstill after the January 9 deadline. But the player union has made preparations for training facilities and Player Hubs.
They are also in agreement to call a strike. The overlap places Project B squarely at the center of the labor talks and the preseason uncertainty surrounding the WNBA.
Project B's flagship events will have a 10-day tournament alongside a broader regular-season title race. While the men's pool has not been revealed yet, the women's side is already shaking up WNBA dynamics.
Project B could pose as WNBA's direct rival
Project B has announced the signing of 10 players so far, with veterans like Alyssa Thomas and Jewell Loyd. WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike was one of the first WNBA players to announce her commitment.
Japanese national team standout Mai Yamamoto also joined the league, further cementing Project B’s commitment to local representation and global reach.
While the WNBA and its players continue to negotiate over revenue and salary structure, Project B reportedly offers salaries significantly higher than those in the WNBA. In some cases, as high as $2 million.
With backing from notable investors like Novak Djokovic, Steve Young, and Candace Parker, Project B is looking set to put the WNBA to the test.
