While Olivia Pichardo already knew what it felt like to be a trailblazer, her recent feat enhanced the glory of her previously well-adorned list.
April 25, 2026, will shine as one of the brightest days in the world of women's baseball, as it witnessed the 22-year-old making history. So much so that even WBSC couldn’t resist announcing her achievement.
“Women's Baseball World Cup star Olivia Pichardo made history… when she became the first girl to pitch in an NCAA Division 1 baseball game,” the World Baseball Softball Confederation applauded. “(She) took the mound in the ninth inning on Saturday, and retired the only batter she faced.”
While she led Brown University 16-4 against Cornell University on Saturday, Pichard was also the first woman to play in a Division 1 game in 2023, against Bryant. Her first collegiate run occurred in 2024, against Princeton.
Surprisingly, among 151 games Brown played since her arrival, Pichardo was in just 6. In fact, she didn’t appear in any games till Saturday. But when it came to finishing, coach Frank Holbrook knew where to look.
But while Pichard climbed one more step on her success ladder, there’s something else that makes her even more special.
Olivia Pichardo’s Humble Approach Towards Her Feat
Debuting with the Women's Baseball National Team, representing the USA at the Women's Baseball World Cup Group Stage or winning silver in the Finals, the list goes on. But the 22-year-old had a certain approach to these.
“I feel like sometimes it might distract a bit too much from the success of our team,” Pichardo said. “We just made the playoffs for the first time since 2007, so that’s a huge accomplishment, and I wouldn’t want to take away from that.”
The spotlight sometimes “feels a little ridiculous.” But possessing that calibre, Pichard knew “it’s something (that was) going to happen.” Nonetheless, it's “not what (her) primary focus is ever on.” Her main goal is to establish that “no matter what division, that door is open and it is possible.”
