Two years after Caitlin Clark broke Pete Maravich's all-time NCAA scoring record, the Indiana Fever posted a celebratory message. It didn't take long for fans to flood the comments with strong opinions.

The team posted a childhood photo of CC on X and wrote: “Two years ago today, Caitlin Clark rewrote the record books and broke Pete Maravich’s 54-year-old record to become the @NCAA all-time leading scorer.”

On March 3, two years ago, Clark cemented her legacy as one of the greatest scorers in college basketball history. During Iowa’s game against the Ohio State Buckeyes women's basketball, she drilled a three-pointer early in the matchup to surpass 3,667 career points.

That shot moved her past Maravich’s iconic mark. “Pistol” Pete had held the record for decades. With that basket, CC became the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer across both men’s and women’s basketball.

However, the fan sentiment about Clark making NCAA history was far from unanimous.

Fans Were Divided Between Caitlin Clark and Pete Maravich

Fans dived into the comment section and participated in the celebration with the former Hawkeyes superstar. “She looks the same… These baby pictures, though,” one user wrote. Well, that’s right, as even CC herself joked about it on Instagram, posting, “I look the exact same LOL.”

Not everyone agreed with the comparisons.“Great achievement, but different eras,” another fan commented.

“Pete had 4,408 total points including his freshman year, when he scored 741 points and averaged 43.7 ppg. Freshmen weren’t allowed to play varsity back then. No shot clock or three-point line either. Caitlin brings the same elite skill set!”

Maravich scored 3,667 of those points in just three varsity seasons at the LSU Tigers men's basketball. That’s why some fans bristled at direct comparisons.

“Never, ever compare Clark to Maravich. Not even close. Pete did it in three years with no three-point shot,” another user wrote.

Still, the debate didn’t stop there. Some fans even pointed to a potential future threat to the Indiana Fever sensation’s record.

“Enjoy it while it lasts. Mikayla Blakes is on track to break that record,” one fan posted.

Mikayla Blakes is currently leading NCAA women’s basketball with an average of 27.1 points per game. The sophomore guard has powered No. 5 Vanderbilt to key wins over Alabama and Tennessee. She averaged 34.5 points and five rebounds across those games.

So yes, the next wave is coming. But for now, Clark’s record still stands. Tell us what you think of the Indiana Fever star's record in the comments.
