NBA Franchise Owner in Talks to Buy, Relocate Connecticut Sun

Dec 20, 2025, 10:30 AM CUT

Months after multiple teams showed interest in purchasing the Connecticut Sun, they have renewed their bid.

While deals didn't go through, it appears talks continued, but there seems to be an update from the Mohegan leadership of the Sun.

“We fully understand and appreciate the value of the phenomenal women’s basketball we have had the privilege to support and lead for 23 remarkable seasons. No agreement has been reached at this time, and we are not at liberty to discuss the details of any potential concepts under consideration.”

The Mohegan Tribe has owned the Connecticut Sun since 2003. The franchise has not won any championships but has appeared in 4 league finals.

While there was no clear indication of who is presenting an offer, fans have a fair idea. Earlier in 2025, the Houston Rockets expressed interest in purchasing the team, with a $250 million fee being discussed.

According to some reports, the sale could happen in early 2026, with the Sun playing its final season in Connecticut. Following that, it could bring one of the most iconic WNBA franchises back.

The Comets were the first league winners with 4 consecutive wins from 1997-2000, producing players like Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper, and Tina Thompson.

But will the relocation work among the looming CBA?

As the deadline to January 9th nears, all players except those on rookie contracts are free agents. If the deal is to happen, it must be before free agency takes place.

That means the early 2026 timeline suggested by rumors will need to see it happen before those rookie contracts expire.

The Connecticut Sun had a rough season of 11-33 under new coach Rachid Meziane. Will a relocation offer a fresh start to the team?
