A viral moment between Maryland's Brenda Frese and star Oluchi Okananwa stood out. During a tough loss to North Carolina, Frese's intense sideline coaching may have raised some eyebrows, but Okananwa's post-game response revealed a different perspective.

The Maryland Terrapins' season ended with a 74-66 defeat to North Carolina on March 22. However, the loss wasn't due to a lack of trust between Frese and her guard.

“Coach understands I’m a competitor at heart,” Okananwa said in her postgame press conference. “I’ve told her this before, and I’ll keep on telling her this until forever: I love to be coached hard, and that’s what she does with me every single day.”

This response stemmed from a viral mid-game moment. Okananwa seemed to be struggling during the 3rd quarter with a turnover, missed free throws, and a missed layup. And at some point, Frese had to pull her aside.

It looked intense, but for Okananwa in “a long game (with) lots of ups and downs,” it helped her regroup. The conversation pushed her to re-focus, and the coach also echoed the necessity of that intensity.

So What Did Brenda Frese Say?

For someone averaging 17.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists over the season, those 3rd quarter mishaps were not the way to go about winning. Frese believed in her player, but there was a need to remind Oluchi of her own potential.

“I believe in you, but you gotta want this moment”, is what the coach said to Okananwa on the sidelines. A lot of chest tapping and aggression, but that made the Guard return to the paint and rack up 21 points and 6 rebounds. And Frese knew what she was doing.

“We do have to have those tough conversations. You can’t have them without a relationship”, the coach said post-game. “I kind of wanted to implore just how much belief I had in her and just kind of challenge her, ‘Do you want the moment?’ And you saw she went out,” added the HC.

She responded immediately, and her performance proved it. Moving forward, do you think we’ll see more intense moments from this duo as the competition gets deeper? Leave a comment.
