Las Vegas Aces Add Chennedy Carter in Surprise Signing

As if the Las Vegas Aces weren't already in a title-winning position, they now add one of the most prolific scorers in the league, Chennedy Carter.
The deal came to light through Jackie Powell on Wednesday, before the official team announcement. The veteran guard will be on a training camp contract with the Aces.
The Las Vegas Aces have actively worked during this free agency period, and many widely consider Carter’s addition one of their best signings as they pursue a fourth WNBA title.
The Atlanta Dream selected Carter as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, and she made an immediate impact. She finished as a runner-up in the Rookie of the Year award behind the Minnesota Lynx's Crystal Dangerfield.
Carter was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks after another solid season with the Dream, where she spent only one year. She went on to skip the 2023 WNBA season before joining the Chicago Sky in 2024.
The 27-year-old ranked 14th in the league in points per game and second in field goal percentage among guards. She was also the third guard in WNBA history to make at least 50% of her two-pointers while making 10 or more a game.
Carter has averaged 14.6 points per game in her four seasons. While that is an impressive stat, her poor conduct both on and off the court has been overshadowing her from reaching her full potential.
The most infamous episode arrived when Carter shoulder-checked Fever rookie Caitlin Clark during a Chicago Sky loss. Officials upgraded her foul to a Flagrant 1 but did not fine her.
In addition, Atlanta suspended her in 2021 after an altercation with teammate Courtney Williams. LA benched her mid-season in 2022 due to behavioral issues, and she was the catalyst for a reported locker room instability in Chicago in 2024.
But controversies aside, Aces HC Becky Hammon knows her worth, as Carter is getting an opportunity to earn a spot on the main roster.
Why Chennedy Carter is a Safe Bet for the Las Vegas Aces
For starters, Carter is on a non-guaranteed, training camp contract. So the Aces can part ways with her anytime they see fit.
Moreover, the Aces are led by coach Becky Hammon and four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson. Hammon's abilities as a man-manager need no conversation, while the Aces can count on Wilson to bring out the best of any player she partners with.
Should Carter keep the disciplinary issues aside, she will most likely be a valuable asset to the team, be it as a starter or a rotational player.
In her last WNBA season before joining the Chinese Women's Basketball Association (WCBA) in 2025, Carter averaged 17.5 points per game on 48.7% shooting from the field with the Chicago Sky in 2024.
So, do you think we will eventually see Chennedy Carter feature in the starting lineup with the Aces?
