The LSU Tigers' women's basketball team returned to the SEC's winning column yesterday, and coach Kim Mulkey had a lot to say about the victory.
The Tigers began the 2025-26 campaign in grand fashion, obliterating every side in their way. However, 2026 got off to a disastrous start for the team.
Before yesterday's game, Mulkey's girls had played two matches in 2026 and lost both of them. However, the side's convincing 80-59 victory against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs in their last game revamped Mulkey's trust in her girls
She said, "We needed a win, certainly. When you lose by a two in the second last shot, that’s a heartbreaker. And then you lose by 4, that’s another heartbreaker back-to-back. But the team doesn’t get down."
Mulkey also mentioned that "new faces" in the locker room were learning the intricacies of the game, which became a factor in their two losses.
However, she hoped things would be better soon, saying, "We're gonna be ok. The sky is not falling."
But while Mulkey's players did the job on the court, she identified the primary reason behind their losses, which helped them return to the winning column in their last match.
Kim Mulkey viewed "possession" as the primary factor behind their losses
Mulkey appeared in a media conference following the Tigers' second loss in 2026 against the Vanderbilt Commodores. She highlighted how the team was losing close encounters despite doing most things right, except for one.
Speaking about how she would make the team prepare for the next match, Mulkey said, "Watch the film. Show each of them how it was only one possession [that took the games away from us]. It was only one possession, Coach. But, Coach, we're alright; it's just one possession. So, you show them that. And then you go on the floor. And then you go to work."
The Tigers' convincing victory over the Lady Bulldogs indicates that Mulkey and her girls "worked" on their possession deficit pretty well to revamp their winning form.
