Kayla McBride Impresses Cheryl Reeve in Training Camp After Recovery

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has been impressed with how well five-time All-Star Kayla McBride has been training after multiple injuries.

In an X post by Minnesota Lynx writer Andrew Dukowitz on April 23, Reeve highlighted the veteran's energy at training camp and the efforts she has put into her recovery.

“I think she’s excited, her energy has been just terrific, she enjoys what she calls the “baby energy,” you know, of all these [rookies]. She’s the oldest in her family, so she kind of has that way about her, she enjoys kind of taking care of the group. She looks great, she’s excited about the work she’s put in on her body... she feels great, which that’s the most important thing, and I think she’s excited for the season.”

McBride suffered a torn quad injury in January while playing for the recent EuroLeague winners Fenerbahçe, which initially put her WNBA season in question.

McBride sustained a further setback: a ruptured eardrum while flying from Turkey to the USA on a plane. She was unable to fly in the injury’s immediate aftermath, per Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao.

The Lynx opened training camp on April 19, and McBride indicated faith in her injury recovery two days prior. “Everything is going well, so you’ll see me soon.” She did not specify an exact return date.

Although, with how impressed coach Reeve has been with McBride's training regimen, we will likely see her back on the hardwood sooner rather than later.

McBride's recent injury struggles did not erase her efforts with the Lynx over the past five years, as she recently signed a new contract.

Kayla McBride Signs a Lower Max Salary Deal with the Minnesota Lynx

McBride's agent, Ticha Penicheiro of Priority Sports, told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne that the 33-year-old is returning to Minnesota on a two-year, lower-max salary.

She averaged 14.2 points per game and shot 39.5% from 3-point range last season, finishing in second rank in the league in 3-pointers made (103).

McBride is one of the Lynx's core players who helped the team set its best regular-season record last season (34-10) alongside star Napheesa Collier.

However, Collier herself is currently in her recovery period after undergoing surgery on both ankles in January.

The Lynx will hope McBride returns to full fitness ahead of their May 10 season opener against Angel Reese's Atlanta Dream.

So, do you think Kayla McBride's name will be on the starting lineup come opening night?
