Jason Whitlock Questions Caitlin Clark Effect As Fever Ticket Sales Draw Attention

The hype around the 2026 WNBA season opener between the Indiana Fever and Dallas Wings has been massive, but it hasn't translated to ticket sales. This led the Indiana-born analyst, Jason Whitlock, to question Caitlin Clark’s impact on ticket demand.
The Fever vs. Wings game is set to be played at the Fever's den in Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with an official seating capacity of 18,000. However, according to Ticketmaster and BroBible, about 30% of the total tickets are still unsold, with the second and third levels more than 40% empty. With even Clark's name failing to attract the expected number of fans, Whitlock viewed this as an unholy sign for the WNBA.
An X update from NBA Base displayed him saying, “The Indiana Fever, they’re struggling to sell tickets for Caitlin Clark. That’s not a good omen. That’s a sign that the WNBA is about to potentially crash and burn; that they’ve probably already burned up the goodwill that Caitlin Clark earned them.”
Whitlock also stated, “If you can’t sell out the Indiana Fever's first home game and you’re basically having to reduce prices and give tickets away to see Caitlin Clark, that is an indicator not just that Caitlin Clark has lost her star power, it’s an indicator that the entire league is teetering at the brink of an uprising and a backlash that’s really long overdue.”
What makes the low ticket sales even more surprising is the star power of the Wings team. The side will be led by another renowned WNBA athlete, Paige Bueckers, and the NCAA star-turned WNBA player, Azzi Fudd. Even with such noted players set to participate in the game, the ticket sales are nowhere near the expected mark.
While the decline of the Caitlin Clark effect, as Whitlock highlighted, might be a significant factor behind the low purchase rate of tickets, there's another glaring reason behind the same.
Indiana Fever vs. Dallas Wings Ticket Prices Are Much Higher Than the Other Games
One of the main reasons behind the low ticket sales for the Fevers vs. Wings game appears to be the startlingly high prices, which raise bigger concerns about the WNBA, as rising player salaries may not match fan demand.
The Fever sold out their first home games in each of the past two years, which may not be repeated this year. And the cheaper ticket prices played a significant part in this.
Now, if you’re wondering about the prices, the cheapest seat at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the May 9 opener costs $97.11, compared to just $21 for the same seat on May 20 against the Portland Fire.
The price difference gets even bigger closer to the court. A seat 11 rows from the floor in section 16 costs $228 for the May 20 game, but jumps to $876.95 for the opener on May 9, a roughly 300% increase.
For comparison, about $875 can get you a seat just nine rows from the court for Game 2 of an NBA playoff series between the Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs, meaning you can pay the same for better seats at an NBA playoff game than for worse seats at the Fever vs. Dallas Wings opener.
So, do you really think that the high ticket prices are the primary reason behind fans showing less interest in the tickets to the 2026 WNBA season opener? Let us know your thoughts.
