‘Insane’: Azzi Fudd’s Insane Free Throw Record Sparks Debate Among Fans

Azzi Fudd didn’t get the best type of ending for her Collegiate career. And despite trailing a notable stat, the fans have much to debate.
On April 4, the UConn Huskies fell short to the South Carolina Gamecocks by 62-48, which forced them to take a U-turn from the Final 4. While Fudd’s game hit the bottom line in the match, The Sporting News highlighted her career milestone.
“Azzi Fudd's college career at UConn ended with just 10 missed free throws”, they took to X on April 5. Highlighting the senior Husky Guard’s free throw percentage, which is 95.5% per ESPN.
In her 5 seasons with the Huskies, Fudd’s time was cut short due to injury setbacks. But in the 115 games she played, Fudd attempted 133 FTs and landed 123 of them. Which is quite the celebratory achievement in itself.
She also averaged 17.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. With a near 50/40/90 split, she shot 48.1% from the field, 44.7% from the 3P arc, and 95.5% from the free throws. However, she made 0 FTs in the final game.
Following this, many of the UConn fans applauded this feat. But many did not quite agree with it entirely. And this resulted in a debate in the comments.
Fans Debated Over Azzi Fudd’s Free-Throw Stats
Playing her last season in the UConn jersey, Fudd surely wanted to join the elite list of Huskies’ net cutters. Although her final performance faltered, some fans couldn’t take the spotlight away from her.
“Missing 10 out of 133 is clutch and never missed more than 3 in a season, made 42 out of 44 her final year. 47/42/92 is elite efficiency. She should be so proud of herself, came back from a major leg injury and won MOP on the way to becoming a Champion, now a #1 draft prospect”, wrote a fan.
During her high school career, Fudd tore both the ACL and MCL in her right knee. Later on, with UConn, she suffered another non-contact ACL tear and a medial meniscus tear in the same knee, following multiple sprains. So, coming up with a tough game even after all these years is remarkable to many fans.
“Two major knee injuries! She has torn her ACL and MCL twice in her life and still came back as one of the best in the country”, wrote a fan. Another added, “Absolutely remarkable! She is such a warrior.” “That. Is. Insane.” Said another.
However, most just disagreed. According to these fans, coming up only 123 FTs despite playing 5 years is pretty much on the low line. Her game against the Gamecocks largely added to this.
“Fudd did not get to the line at all in her final game and only shot a total of four free throws in her last eleven games. Her volume is bottom tier, so the percentage does not generally have real game impact”, someone wrote. Another added, “How she only shot 133 FT in a 4-year career is crazy. That’s Shai in 3 games.”
Despite the mixed comments, Fudd remains one of the impactful shooters whose best is yet to come.
Moving forward, do you think she’ll max out her capacities in the WNBA? Comment it down.
