Madison Keys received several confusing text messages about a strike in Paris. Now, she decided to speak on a movement that could change professional tennis for good.
Keys addressed the growing tension in her post-match press conference at the Italian Open on May 9, 2026. After a comeback win over Peyton Stearns, the conversation shifted to the potential boycott of the French Open.
Keys admitted the news caught her off guard. "I was a little surprised," Keys told reporters. She explained that she hadn't been following the headlines until the messages started rolling in.

On May 5, Aryna Sabalenka floated the idea that players might need to boycott a Grand Slam to fight for their rights. Sabalenka argued that players provide the entertainment and deserve a bigger piece of the pie.
Her comments highlighted frustrations regarding revenue sharing, player welfare, and a general lack of representation when the 4 major tournaments make big decisions.
Once Keys understood the entire scenario, she showed her support for the movement. She noted that it is "great to see the top players speaking out, taking initiative, being vocal about the issues that have always been issues but continue to be issues."
Despite the heavy talk of a strike, Keys is not calling for an immediate walkout. She said, "I’m cautiously optimistic," and hopes the situation never reaches a point where "anything radical" has to happen.
The Revenue Distribution and Who Supports Aryna Sabalenka
The French Open, also known as Roland Garros, announced a prize fund of €61.7 million for 2026. While that is a 9.5% increase in cash, the players' share of the tournament's total revenue dropped from 15.5% to 14.9%.
With the tournament expected to earn over €400 million, the players are demanding a share closer to 22%. This is the same model used at major 1000-level events like the Italian Open.
For lower-ranked players, this money is important because they often lose money on travel and coaching costs after losing in the early rounds.
While Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff have offered strong support for Sabalenka’s leadership, others are more hesitant. Jannik Sinner and Elena Rybakina have voiced their understanding of the frustration. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek has said she prefers direct negotiations over a boycott.
On the other hand, Emma Raducanu stated she would not participate in a strike. The French Tennis Federation has released a statement saying they remain committed to dialogue, but so far, no new financial offers have been made.
While the politics heat up off the court, Keys is staying focused on the red clay under her feet as she prepares for the trip to France.
The players are pushing for reforms that include better pensions and health support for everyone on the tour. In previous years, players often complained individually, but this year feels different because of the unity Keys mentioned.
What do you think about the players' demands for a bigger share of the revenue? Should they go through with a boycott if things don't change?
