Iga Swiatek Reveals True Opinion About Coco Gauff After United Cup Defeat

The United Cup semifinal in Sydney became a hotspot for one of modern tennis' noteworthy rivalries. Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek faced off at the Ken Rosewall Arena with a finals spot at stake.
The American claimed a thrilling 6-4, 6-2 singles victory, and Iga Swiatek couldn't help but express her emotions out loud.
“I feel like Coco has improved stuff. It’s quite visible,” Swiatek said in the post-game press conference. “The matches we played a couple of years back were most of them were kind of one-sided. I feel like that’s it. She’s also growing in age, more experienced as well. So yeah, she’s been a top player for many years now, even though she started with she was, like, 16, much earlier than most of us do. Yeah, congrats to her basically.”
That is high praise coming from a former world no. 1 and 6-time grand slam winner, especially with talks about Gauff’s service game not being up to the mark.
Her words also highlight how their rivalry has grown. Swiatek held a 11-1 head-to-head to Gauff, but the Polish player has now lost to her the last 4 times, closing the advantage to 11-5. With this win, she’s the first player ever to beat the Pole four times in straight sets.
The 21-year-old American showed signs of maturity by remaining calm under pressure and confidently grabbing opportunities at the right time. Gauff reflected on her win, saying that she didn't let the early missed opportunities rattle her. Even though Swiatek played well, Gauff felt confident in her game plan and remained certain she would 'get it done.'
While Gauff took the semifinal win, Team Poland had the last laugh
Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zieliński clinched the mixed doubles win over Gauff and Christian Harrison 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), sealing Poland’s place in the final.
Still, the semifinal underlined a broader narrative: Gauff’s growing confidence and experience are reshaping a rivalry that once seemed one-sided.
They'll play Team Switzerland for the 2026 title on Sunday.
