“I Was Told I Can’t Do This”: Caitlin Clark’s Viral Reaction Brings Attention to Ayami Sato

Going against the odds just to prove something is a regular occurrence in the sports world. But this time, Caitlin Clark has noticed someone else.
Strangely enough, this is not about an athlete, or a rival, or a peer. But Ayami Sato is what you call a fighter with resilience. And seeing someone who doesn’t have “backing down” in her vocabulary, Clark had to pass a massive nod.
“GOAT”, wrote Clark under the NBA’s latest post, which featured the athletic trainer of the Indiana Pacers and a backscene hero who wears no cape. “I was told I can't do this so many times”, Sato said in the video. “Maybe let's try, and then I tried.”
Growing up, moving places back and forth, Ayami was told she couldn’t be the trainer that she is. She was just “used to being a new person in the environment.” But what happens when you refuse to settle down and follow your passion?
Well, Sato knows. She’s now an irreplaceable member of the Pacers staff. And looking back, she could only suggest, “No matter what other people say, if you want to try, at least give it a shot. And then that might happen.”
But what has truly urged the Indiana Fever star to acknowledge Sato? Well, it is the same trajectory Clark herself has embraced thoroughly.
Caitlin Clark Resonated With Ayami Sato
In a 2025 interview, Clark said that her favourite book growing up was “Winners Never Quit”, a picture book about American Soccer star Mia Hamm. And before she knew, the Fever Guard had self-implanted that mentality.
The most notable example is her FIBA qualifiers game in San Juan. In 2025, Clark’s season was cut short by a groin injury. For 8 months, she couldn’t make it back to the hardwood. But when she finally did, CC returned with an MVP award.
She has refused to limit herself to basketball. Playing soccer, golf, taking the mic as an NBC broadcaster, or a photographer stint; she’s been there and done all of that.
So, when Sato came up and shared her journey, it was her resilience and urgency to push through obstacles that CC took notice of. Do you find any resemblance here? Comment it down.
