Flau'jae Johnson has completed her four-year college career with the LSU Tigers, averaging 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, and is now being recognized for both her play and her impact off the court.

On April 4, Flau'jae Johnson was honored with the key to the city by Mayor-President, Sid Edwards in Baton Rouge, with Kim Mulkey speaking on her behalf during the ceremony.

“Of course, we're all going to remember Flau’jae running and grabbing me after the national championship,” said Kim Mulkey, recalling a shared core memory from Johnson’s freshman season, when LSU won its first national title and Mulkey secured her fourth Division I championship.

She added that the celebration actually happened while the game was still going on.

“Well, the game's still going on… Johnny Derrick… said, y'all need to get off the floor. You're going to get a technical,” she said, noting she brushed it off in the moment.

The 63-year-old made it clear, "I didn't care in that moment how many technicals we're going to win that ballgame," because "there are so many Flau’jae stories I can't even tell you that you guys have experienced with her in this city."

She also praised Flau'jae Johnson’s character, noting, "The things that she does for people and it never gets acknowledged and that's who she is... She just got the big Kay Yow Award, Servant of the Year, because she gave to cancer research."

For those who don't know, Johnson has donated over $25,000 to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and has supported events that provide free mammograms, including one she hosted in Savannah.

Reflecting on her purpose, the 22-year-old said in an interview with WAFB, “It’s nothing better than inspiration. My goal is to inspire before you expire,” while Mulkey added that her name and impact will be remembered for years to come.

While Mulkey reflected on Johnson’s journey and character, city leaders also highlighted the broader impact she has made beyond the game.

Flau’jae Johnson’s Impact Earns Rare City Recognition

Sid Edwards said Flau'jae Johnson earned the honor for her impact beyond basketball, highlighting her success with the LSU Tigers and her work supporting the community and inspiring young people.

“It goes without saying, the basketball part,” Edwards said. “But what she does in the community and what she means to Baton Rouge, I just think, when we have a chance to celebrate a human being like that, we give the highest honor.”

The city also declared April 4 as “Big 4 Day” in her honor, recognizing both her achievements on the court and her lasting impact on the Baton Rouge community.

Do you think Flau'jae Johnson’s impact off the court makes her legacy even greater than her basketball achievements?
