Georgetown Honors Azzi Fudd’s Mother Katie With Emotional Tribute

Mar 8, 2026, 2:35 PM CUT

While Azzi Fudd and the UConn Huskies secured a convincing win over Georgetown at the Big East tournament, Fudd’s mother, Katie Smrcka-Duffy Fudd, ended up stealing a bit of the spotlight.

During the game's halftime break, Katie was inducted into the Georgetown Big East legends list, earning recognition for her contributions to the women's basketball team of her alma mater, the Georgetown Hoyas.

Maggie Vanoni, a UConn hoops reporter, shared a glimpse of the ceremony on X. Its caption read, “Azzi Fudd’s mom, Katie, is recognized as Georgetown’s 2026 Big East Legend.”

Notably, Katie spent three seasons playing for the Georgetown Hoyas women's basketball during her college career. During that time, she averaged more than 15 points per game in each of her three seasons with the program.

Much like her daughter, Azzi Fudd, she also showed impressive two-way ability.

But scoring wasn’t the only area where Katie stood out. Along with her strong offensive game, she was also known for her playmaking and defensive presence. In each of her three seasons at Georgetown, she quietly recorded more than three assists per game while also making an impact with steals and blocks.

With numbers like that, recognition from her alma mater eventually felt inevitable.

Azzi Fudd’s Mother Never Imagined This Major Milestone Coming

Reflecting on the moment, the 47-year-old admitted it still feels surreal. “It is crazy,” she said.

Katie continued, “Who would have thought? But I do think it comes back to leaving it better than you found it. I wanted to set a precedent of how you carry yourself, how you work, setting expectations of success and winning. I wanted to get everyone into that mindset and that culture of winning, not just ‘We are here to play,’ but ‘We are here to win.’”

Besides her three seasons at Georgetown, Fudd’s mother also spent one season playing in the ACC with NC State. She impressed there as well, averaging more than 12 points per game along with over two assists.

Beyond all those achievements, though, one of her biggest successes is the way she developed Azzi for her own journey in the basketball world.

While its quite apparent that Katie cherished her daughter's victory in the Big East quarterfinals, do you think she also felt some sting since Azzi defeated her alma mater, Georgetown?
