Flau'jae Johnson’s LSU tenure didn't end on the best note. But that didn't stop LSU assistant coach Bob Starkey and the authorities from wishing the best for her, which overwhelmed Johnson.
On April 12, the Tigers’ official X account shared a highlight reel featuring Johnson's glorious moments as a tribute to her, now that she is set to enter the WNBA. Assistant coach Starkey played the narrator for the video, and it can be safely said that he did a commendable job.
The former LSU No. 4 could not hold her emotions back after witnessing it. She publicized the video through an X update, with the caption describing her feelings. Johnson penned, "I just shed real tears... I love you, @LSU I love you, @CoachBobStarkey. Tomorrow is the day! #TheBiggest"
Johnson and Starkey have shared a close player-coach relationship. The 66-year-old has often praised Johnson's work ethic and impact on the team, famously stating, "They’re going to make a movie about her one day".
Starkey also featured in Johnson's series called "Film Fridays," where the duo shared their technical film study sessions with fans.
Starkey is probably the coach who has influenced Johnson the most in her career and laid a pathway to transition to the next level of basketball as a WNBA player.
Johnson has enjoyed an illustrious collegiate career with LSU, where she won the national championship in her freshman year. She also scored more than 2000 points and is a multi-time All-American and All-SEC performer.
The 22-year-old has averaged 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over the 100 games played in four years.
With her time with Kim Mulkey's LSU in Baton Rouge now completed, Johnson will be in attendance for the WNBA Draft on Monday, as this will be the third straight season an LSU player will be taken in the draft.
Now that the draft night is upon us, let's take a look at where Flau'jae is expected to land.
Flau'jae Johnson's WNBA Draft Projections
The only thing we can say for certain now is that Flau'jae Johnson is expected to be a top 10 overall pick in the WNBA Draft. The current consensus before draft night is that Johnson is expected to land anywhere between fifth and eighth overall.
ESPN still has Johnson as a top 5 pick with the Chicago Sky, despite last season's early exit. Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated opts for a No.7 overall pick with the new team, Portland Fire.
But the Athletic and CBS Sports are not that high on Johnson. Both outlets have chosen the 22-year-old as a No. 9 overall pick with the Washington Mystics.
