Eileen Gu will probably have to build an extra shelf for all the medals she won in Milan because she added another one to her collection.
The USA-born freestyle skier competed for her mother’s country, China. And on February 22, she defended her Beijing gold. Gu is now the most decorated freeskier in history with 6 Olympic medals. Following the Sunday victory, Gu opened up about her feelings.
"I'm the most decorated freeskier of all time, male or female…”, said Gu. “That's a testament to competitive strength, it's mental strength. It's being able to perform under pressure. It has nothing to (do with) if you're a boy or a girl."
Gu won two gold medals in halfpipes and big air, and a slopestyle silver in the 2022 Beijing Games. The medal list now also includes two silvers in slopestyle and big air, and a halfpipe gold in Milan. With this feat, she’s the first athlete to medal in all three freestyle skiing events.
This was a test of her resilience, as Gu summed it up. “Every day I was fighting. I gave my all every single day that I’ve been here, and that’s no joke," she said.
"Being able to lead the way and pioneer the sport is something I never imagined I’d be able to do, but I’m really honored and proud that I have.”
And such a victory is bound to draw praise from others. Which is exactly what happened.
Bronze Winner Zoe Atkin Praised Eileen GU
Atkin is another USA-born skier who competed for her father’s country, Britain. She entered the program as the defending world champion (2025) in women’s freestyle skiing halfpipe. The 23-year-old’s admiration for Gu was clear in her statement.
“[Gu] is a really great competitor. She's a really amazing skier," said Atkin. “We have an amazing group of skiers as well. I think the level is truly unmatched, and I think that's really special. I think that makes it really exciting to watch for the next coming years."
And not just Atkin. Gu’s groundbreaking medal run drew praise from New Zealand's Mischa Thomas, who labelled Gu as “unreal” and “Wonder Woman”. Emphasising, “It's pretty crazy how good she is."
Despite entering the Winter Games with a tough schedule, Gu will return with 6 medals. She has defied all the odds and reached a level that will be unbeaten for the next 4 years.
