For two years, Caitlin Clark’s presence has revolutionized the WNBA from many aspects. So, seeing the GM Survey put her below Chelsea Gray, Rachel DeMita just had to disagree.
For the best point guard category, 73% GM voted for Gray, 20% voted for Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers got 7% votes. But comparing Gray’s 11-season and Clark’s 53-games’ overall stats, DeMita had some clear points to make.
“I do not understand why so many WNBA fans, front office, coaches, all the things have Chelsea Gray above Caitlin Clark when it comes to the point guard position,” she stated in the latest episode of her Courtside Club podcast. “There is no argument for it.”
To name a few, Clark averages 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists overall, compared to Gray’s 11.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists. And despite having more elite players in Las Vegas Aces, Gray’s steals and blocks are lower than Clark’s.
While this automatically shatters the “Clark can’t play defense” argument, DeMita further stated that “Chelsea Gray is not going to get exponentially better before she retires.” But having just started her career, there’s plenty of room for Clark’s growth.
The point is, “Statistically, numbers wise, game flow wise… Caitlin Clark is a lot better.” And DeMita would extend this argument in another category as well.
Rachel DeMita Would Put Caitlin Clark Over Paige Bueckers
The other category where Clark could’ve absolutely excelled but didn’t was the “a player to build a franchise around.” Here, Bueckers received 33% vote while Clark stood at 20%, that last year’s 50%. And a reaction from DeMita was inevitable.
“Do GM’s think Paige Bueckers is going to make this crazy leap in the WNBA?” she said. “So, you’re telling me one season of injuries for Caitlin where she was injured before the season even started dropped her now to 20% on starting a franchise.”
Clark’s presence propelled massive viewership surge, recorded league-high traffic, and her absence also dropped the viewership to 55%. So, the reason of the vote-drop is unclear, unless the “GMs somehow think that she’s going to be injury-prone.”
Moving forward, among the voters and DeMita, which side of the argument do you support? Comment it down.
