The Chicago Sky’s training camp opened far from full strength, with five key players overseas and DiJonai Carrington sidelined by a mid-foot sprain that cut short her 2025 season with the Minnesota Lynx.

However, there’s good news for Chicago Sky fans. Carrington, the team's newest star, has undergone minor surgery to remove hardware from her left foot and appears to be recovering ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.

On April 20th, The Athletic’s veteran reporter, Annie Costabile, shared an update on X: "DiJonai Carrington had a minor procedure to remove hardware from her left foot, sources tell me. The recent surgery was an expected follow up to one this offseason addressing a season-ending left foot injury she suffered with the Lynx in 2025," she wrote.

While head coach Tyler Marsh didn’t give a timeline for DiJonai Carrington’s debut with the Chicago Sky, her recovery is on track, and she’s expected to arrive in Chicago "soon."

The Chicago Sky have been active this offseason, and in signing DiJonai Carrington, they did so with knowledge of her injury status.

DiJonai Carrington, the No. 20 pick in 2021, spent four seasons with the Connecticut Sun and won Most Improved Player in 2024. She then played for the Dallas Wings and the Minnesota Lynx in 2025, where she posted solid numbers in 11 games: 8.6 points per game on 48.5% shooting, while also adding 1.2 steals. Once fully healthy, she’s expected to make an impact.

But her path to this point hasn’t been easy, and it starts with how the injury unfolded.

DiJonai Carrington's Injury History

DiJonai Carrington injured her left foot against the Golden State Valkyries in September 2025 and has been out since, also missing the 2026 Unrivaled season while recovering.

“It’s super disappointing, especially with how everything ended up playing out. So, I’m definitely a little down right now. I’m getting ready to get my surgery and all that,” Carrington said in October last year.

The hardware removal procedure is common and used to treat pain, irritation, or infection from implants, but DiJonai Carrington has already been through a lot physically.

Before turning 25, she dealt with two ACL injuries that led to six knee surgeries. Last season, she also missed time with a rib injury and eventually saw her season end due to the foot injury. Her body has taken a heavy toll.

Having said that, do you think the Chicago Sky made the right call signing DiJonai Carrington despite her injury concerns?
