'Did She Ask NY Liberty?': Fans Explode Over Breanna Stewart’s Future Comments

Apr 2, 2026, 2:30 PM CUT

Breanna Stewart has confirmed that she will re-sign with the New York Liberty. She further revealed that she has no intentions of even taking any free agency meetings despite being an unrestricted free agent.

Announcing her choice to stay with the Liberty during a recent episode of her podcast Game Recognize Game with Stewie and Myles, Stewart also explained the reason behind her decision.

"I'm going to just set the record straight here. I will be staying in New York," Breanna Stewart said. "I'm not planning on taking any free agency meetings, even though I am an unrestricted free agent. My family is set up here, we're solid here."

She added, "I'm going to be back in New York, and that's all there is to it. Good luck to everybody in free agency, but I'm not a part of that."

Breanna Stewart’s announcement comes as the WNBA enters a historic free agency period following the new CBA deal that made over 100 players unrestricted free agents.

A two-time WNBA MVP and three-time champion who led the Liberty to their first title in 2024, Stewart is eligible for a supermax contract starting at $1.4 million in the upcoming WNBA season.

Her teammate, Sabrina Ionescu, made a similar announcement, confirming her intention to return to New York as well. The declarations come ahead of the free agency period, which is set to begin on April 7.

Fans Respond to Breanna Stewart Free Agency Decision

A good chunk of fans weren't really surprised by Stewart's announcement, given her loyalty and commitment to the franchise.

"I don't think anyone thought any different either. Makes sense," a comment read.

Echoing a similar sentiment, a fan wrote, "Not surprising."

Another comment read, "This was obvious."

"Stewie ain’t going nowhere!! Let’s Go Stew York!!" a delighted fan wrote.

Another fan expressed their relief, writiing, "Best news all day!"

Fans also highlighted how Stewart repeatedly took one-year deals below the maximum or supermax salary to help Liberty hold on to key players, expressing their concerns over her being lowballed.

"Let's hope Liberty don't try to short change Stewie," a comment read.

Another fan sarcastically pointed out the same, writing, "Liberty execs rubbing their hands and seeing the opportunity. Offering her the minimum. “It’s more than you made last year anyway!”

However, the comments section also hosted some negativity, as a response read, "Did she ask NY liberty if they want her back?"

That being said, fans can expect Breanna Stewart to feature in the lineup when the New York Liberty face the Connecticut Sun on opening night of the 2026 WNBA season.
