‘Devious Women’: Fans Divided As WNBA Introduces Pregnancy Salary Cap Exception in New CBA

The WNBA and the WNBPA, after a prolonged dispute that lasted over a year, recently agreed on a new CBA that would benefit players in a never-before-seen way.
As updates roll out, an amendment to policies concerning pregnant players has made the news.
As per the new CBA, pregnant WNBA players will no longer be subjected to salary cap restrictions. Furthermore, they will also have veto power over trades.
Dubbed the "Hamby Rule" by the media and the masses, the amendment mandating the consent of pregnant players honors WNBA player Dearica Hamby, who took legal action against the Las Vegas Aces after she was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks in 2023.
Hamby alleged that the trade was a result of her revealing her pregnancy and filed a federal lawsuit in 2024, accusing the Aces and the WNBA of pregnancy discrimination and retaliation.
While the case was dismissed in December 2025, the amendment protecting pregnant WNBA players stems from Hamby's battle and advocacy.
Formally known as the "Pregnancy Clause," the amendment will effectively prevent forced relocations that could disrupt critical medical care, increase stress, or endanger health. Even so, the response to it has been divided.
The Mixed Reactions
Ranging from fears about rule exploitation to cheers to the landmark accomplishment, the Internet weighed in rather heavily on the new CBA.
"Expect these WNBPA players to get pregnant as soon they get word that they’re potentially on the trading block. They are some devious women," one fan wrote.
Another comment questioned the move, reading, "Why? That makes no sense, if another team trades for her it's none of her business no matter if she's knocked up or not."
A critic demanding stricter action, wrote, "They need to just put in the contract that if they get pregnant they are released immediately."
Echoing similar thoughs, a comment read, "Just cut them, end of conversation."
Although the negative responses seemed prevalent, some fans recognized the amendment as a positive step that supports player autonomy.
"This is dope. Great job for everyone involved," one fan wrote.
Yet another acknowledged the historic moment, writing, "Big step forward for the league."
While fans may be divided on the decision, it is clear that the league is enhancing overall WNBA player conditions, as many previously opted for overseas leagues due to better pay and stability.
But that gap could be further narrowed down thanks to the efforts of the WNBA and the WNBPA, as the new CBA is expected to retain more talent and improve the overall quality of play.
