“Deserved So Much Better!”: Fans Side With Lisa Leslie After She Calls Out Geno Auriemma

UConn's loss against the Gamecocks in the Final Four of the NCAA got the side's coach, Geno Auriemma, putting up a display of untoward behavior, which was called out by several noted personas. And fans stood beside Lisa Leslie when she addressed the issue.
UConn's undefeated run this season concluded with a 62–48 loss against the Gamecocks, ending their NCAA Championship aspirations. Following the match, the head coaches, Auriemma and Dawn Staley, got involved in a heated exchange, which most blamed on the UConn HC.
Leslie put out an X update to address the issue. Besides congratulating Staley and the Gamecocks, the former WNBA star also bashed Auriemma, writing, "It’s a real shame that #Geno took the low road! We have all had to lose with class! Geno of the @UConnWBB needs to start with an apology!!! #GenoApologize.” A large chunk of fans were on the same page as Leslie.
In the final seconds of the South Carolina Gamecocks’ 62–48 win, Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma approached each other as if to shake hands, but Auriemma said something instead, which led to a heated exchange.
As tensions rose, the two had to be separated by the match officials. Auriemma was guided away, but when he passed by again, Staley continued shouting before her staff stepped in to calm her down.
Auriemma later apologized for his actions, saying, "There's no excuse how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina," and acknowledged it did not reflect his standards at UConn.
"I want to apologize to the staff and team at South Carolina. It was uncalled for in how I reacted... I want to sincerely apologize to them," he added, though many fans felt it wasn’t enough.
While the on-court incident drew immediate attention, the reaction from fans quickly added another layer to the controversy.
Geno Auriemma Faces Heat After Final Four
A key reason for the South Carolina Gamecocks' win was holding Azzi Fudd to 8 points and Sarah Strong to 12.
The loss marked Azzi Fudd’s final game with the UConn Huskies, and after feeling she let her team down, some critics said Geno Auriemma should have handled the moment better.
“The Huskies players also deserved so much better!!,” one user wrote, adding, “He left Azzi Fudd on the court alone, instead of manning up & sending her off to the draft as she deserved. They will all remember.”
“Trruuue!! Like Dawn said, ‘Integrity’!! But I’m sure integrity is the last thing on his mind,” another user wrote, referencing Dawn Staley’s postgame comments.
“Disgusting game full of uncalled fouls and horrible execution across the board,” another user commented.
During the Final Four game, Auriemma also raised concerns about officiating, pointing to a 14–2 free-throw gap and saying his team was being fouled without calls while Staley was allowed to challenge referees.
“There were 6 fouls called that quarter. All of them against us. They've been beating the (expletive) out of our guys down there the entire game. Now I'm not making excuses because we haven't been able to make a shot, but this is ridiculous,” Auriemma said.
Fans continued to react strongly, with some calling for discipline, others defending him, and some criticizing both sides, showing just how divided opinions were after the incident.
So, do you agree with Lisa Leslie, or do you think Geno Auriemma’s reaction was justified in that moment?
