Dawn Staley Sets New NCAA Women’s Basketball Record With $4.25M Salary

Apr 10, 2026, 5:50 PM CUT

Dawn Staley’s coaching prowess does not need any intro. But she recently added another feather to her cap, not in terms of in-court achievements, but in financial terms.

The South Carolina Gamecocks couldn’t have earned their national powerhouse status without Staley. But putting aside all the awards and wins, the Gamecocks’ HC reached a historical milestone that no other NCAA women's basketball coach has touched.

“Dawn Staley is the highest-paid coach in women's college basketball”, USA Today Sports’ reporter Mitchell Northam took it to X on April 9. “Her salary this season increased to $4.25 million.”

As per the USA Today report, this number is a part of the “five-year agreement (Staley) signed in March of 2025. Her annual pay before performance bonuses will increase by $250,000 each year through 2030.”

The Gamecocks may have missed their 4th title on a close call to the UCLA Bruins this year. But that does not dim Staley’s expertise, which has led the franchise to 3 titles, 8 Final Fours, and 6 straight national semifinal appearances.

Such hard work getting its worth is a revolutionary turn for Women’s basketball. However, the Gamecocks’ coach did not really care about the amount that was coming in.

It Was Never About Money for Dawn Staley

Staley has every right to celebrate her feat. But the Gamecocks' HC probably would have been happier if her side could have won the NCAA title, especially since she doesn't view money as her primary driving factor.

"I've never been driven by money at all, never, ever”, she said last year. "Money is the byproduct of your success and your ability to work hard and be successful in your space… I think what it represents is, we play to a certain standard.”

So, getting a raise like this is ultimately about doing your job with utmost perfection and excelling in it uncompromisingly. And as the coach said, “Reward is hard work because it's earned.”

Doing extraordinarily well in her field has earned Staley this position. So, which other NCAA wbb coach/es do you think deserve a raise like the Gamecocks HC?
