Camila Giorgi Confirms Tennis Return in 2027 After Extended Break

Two years after quietly stepping away from the world of professional tennis, Camila Giorgi has set a date for her return.

Giorgi, during an Instagram Q&A with fans this week, confirmed the same answer twice when asked whether she would compete again.

“Yes, in 2027,” she said in response to both questions.

The announcement comes as Camila Giorgi is expecting her first child with her husband, the former tennis player Andreas Ignacio Pasutti, whom she married in February.

The couple confirmed on the Italian TV program Verissimo in March that they are expecting a boy, which explains why her comeback is planned for next year rather than this season.

Camila Giorgi also acknowledged that her 2027 tournament schedule is yet to be determined, but made clear that preparation has already begun during the Q&A.

Giorgi further confirmed that she intends to continue coaching alongside her return to the tour.

That being said, her exit from tennis in 2024 was one of the more unusual departures in recent WTA history, as news of her retirement only surfaced when her name appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s retired list months after she lost to Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open in March of that year.

There was no farewell announcement, no tour statement, and no social media post by Camila Giorgi at the time

To the uninformed, Giorgi’s career peak came at the 2021 Canadian Open, a WTA 1000 event in Montreal, where she defeated several top-ten players to claim the title. She also won titles in Hertogenbosch in 2015, Linz in 2018, and Merida in 2023, and reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2018.

Her game was built around power and aggression from the baseline, making her a dangerous draw for any opponent on any surface when she was at her best.

Having said that, Camila Giorgi has been dropping signs of a potential return for quite some time now.

Camila Giorgi’s Road Back Began Well Before This Week’s Announcement

The indications of potential return have been building for over a year, as Giorgi posted photos of herself back on the court, practicing with ranked player Despina Papamichail in December 2024. The images attracted attention precisely because of her earlier public comments.

In an interview with OA Sport TV last August, she had left the door open clearly.

“Of course, you get these emotions and you say, ‘Why not leave a door open?’” Camila Giorgi said. “Maybe I’d approach this adventure differently, perhaps a little more lightheartedly. You always have to leave doors open, in my opinion.”

Furthermore, Giorgi returned to tennis in a new capacity last year, interviewing players at the ATP 250 Buenos Aires tournament as part of her coaching and broadcasting work.

The transition into that role suggested she had not fully disconnected from the sport, even during the period of uncertainty about her future.

Camila Giorgi, now 34, would return to a WTA Tour that has changed significantly since her departure, with talents like Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Madison Keys, who have risen in her absence, and the path back to competitive relevance will require rebuilding match fitness and ranking points from scratch, but the intent is no longer speculation.
