Caitlin Clark’s Toughest Nights: Games That Tested Her Most

Caitlin Clark built her reputation at Iowa by torching defenses with deep range, volume scoring, and late-game confidence. But even elite shot-makers face resistance at the highest level. There were nights when the star witnessed trouble.
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Kansas State Wildcats - March 4, 2024
At the game against Kansas, Clark scored 24 points, but her efficiency was a bit low. She shot just nine out of 32 (28.1%) hoops from the field. Her 2-of-16 mark from three highlighted her difficulty finding rhythm and spacing. It’s a rare downturn for the former Iowa star.
But her woes deepened in the fourth quarter. She went one out of 10 and failed to give her iconic spark to the team. Iowa was upset in the regular-season finale as Clark’s shooting struggles reflected a night where even elite volume couldn’t lift her team. And the Wildcats won over the Hawkeyes with a score of 65-58.
Indiana Fever vs. Seattle Storm - June 24, 2025
This game marked Clark’s lowest scoring output in the 2025 season. She made just six points from three out of 13 shots. And her six three-point attempts were all misses. Yet, the Indiana Fever claimed a 94-86 win over the Seattle Storm. The reason? Clark had to focus on the defensive game as her shots were constantly neutralized.

She also committed eight turnovers, a season high, while contributing nine assists in a rare imbalance of production. In her stead, Aaliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell carried the game.
Indiana Fever vs. Golden State Valkyries - June 20, 2025
In this match, Caitlin Clark scored 11 points on three out of 14 shots. She attempted seven three-pointers but succeeded in none. This got labelled as the worst performance of the season. The Valkyries’ defense disrupted her rhythm, and she was left with a low-output night.
Like any other point guard, Clark doesn’t like physicality. The Valyries’ coach, Natalie Nakase, claimed, “I watched her at Iowa, she loves that left stepback, it's almost like a layup for her. So we were just making sure she wasn't getting into rhythm and then that she was seeing multiple bodies."
Nevertheless, Indiana relied on balanced scoring and defensive intensity to stay competitive. But the Valkyries won the game with 88-77.
Golden State Valkyries vs. Indiana Fever - July 1, 2025
Clark’s next troubled performance came against the Valkyries once again. She held to 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting in Indiana’s 80-61 loss to the Golden State. Additionally, she missed multiple looks from deep and struggled to gain traction against aggressive defensive coverages.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) rebounds the ball Wednesday, July 9, 2025, during a game between the Indiana Fever and the Golden State Valkyries at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Golden State Valkyries defeated the Indiana Fever, 80-61.
Veronica Burton and Kayla Thornton dominated the court with 21 and 18 points, respectively. This offensive stance made things truly difficult for Clark.
Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty - June 1, 2024
In a 104-68 loss to the New York Liberty, Clark posted just nine points. Liberty defenders contested her every touch, forcing Clark out of rhythm in a lopsided contest.
Clark’s usual playmaking also lagged, as turnovers and contested opportunities replaced her typical facilitation. While teammates faced uphill shots themselves, Liberty’s pressure reflected a defensive scheme that neutralized her early-career scoring prowess. But Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu had a few words of encouragement for Caitlin Clark.
“She'll figure it out. It's not that big of a deal to have a game like that."
New York Liberty vs. Indiana Fever - May 16, 2024
This game had Clark finish with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. The match ended with a 102-66 loss for the Fever. And Clark’s underwhelming performance was the highlight. She shot two out of eight shots from the field and scored only one out of seven threes. Clark also recorded three turnovers, all in the first half, in a night where Liberty's pressure disrupted her efficiency.
She got to the bench early after picking up fouls and did not find a consistent rhythm despite contributing across categories. This performance was an early professional challenge as Indiana struggled to contain New York’s offense.
Indiana Fever vs. Las Vegas Aces - September 11, 2024
Clark endured one of her toughest professional nights against the Aces. Fever fell 86-75 as she scored 16 points and six assists. Aces defenders consistently challenged her shot attempts, limiting her efficiency compared with her season averages.
But Vegas had stars like A’ja Wilson, who scored 27 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark made only 6 out of 22 shots, including 1 out of 10 three-pointers.
Even on her hardest nights, Clark never stopped competing or adjusting. Those struggles may prove temporary, but the resilience behind them could define what comes in the 2026 season.
