Caitlin Clark Reacts to New York Liberty’s Tall Lineup in Preseason Matchup

While the Indiana Fever hit their first road game off efficiently, Caitlin Clark couldn’t help but marvel at the advantage the New York Liberty had.

On April 25, the scoreboard stood at 109-91 in the first preseason game of the 2026 season, much to the Fever’s advantage. But Liberty’s lineup unlocked a different level of threat that the Fever 22 couldn’t ignore.

Liberty star, Jonquel Jones, revealed Clark's observations postgame, saying, “It was funny, because me and Caitlin were checking in at the same time, and she was like, ‘Man, that big lineup for you guys is massive!' I was like, ‘Yeah, man.’"

This “massive” line-up included 6'4 Breanna Stewart, with her elite 7’1 wingspan, who doesn’t play Center but is very much capable of it. Then there was the Chinese Center Han Xu, 6’11. And lastly, Jones herself, 6’6.

Xu, the second-tallest player in the WNBA, posted 20 points in 22 minutes played. In fact, every time she stood beside Clark, the Fever star’s claim was justified. The size difference was just way too visible.

However, that wasn’t really enough for the Liberty to turn the tables on the Fever. And moving forward, Clark highlighted what’s to come.

Caitlin Clark Outlined Fever’s Approach

Hitting the W’s paint after the season-ending injury in 2025, Clark was expected to play for 20-25 minutes. However, she checked in for 17 minutes, posting 7 points. But in the long run, Clark explained how things will be.

“We want to play in transition,” Clark said. “And we want to play with a lot of pace… to outlet to the near guard. If that’s not me, I need to get down the court, and that allows people to come screen for me and get open. It also makes the other team get cross-matched.”

“You’re going to see a good variation of both, but I’m going to be the primary ball handler”, she continued. “That’s never going to change.”

Putting the Liberty in the past, Clark and the Fever will march forward to take on the Dallas Wings on May 1. What do you think awaits them? Comment down your thoughts.
