Back in 2024, Caitlin Clark led the Iowa Hawkeyes all the way to the NCAA finals, only to fall short against South Carolina. That loss, despite her record-breaking career, has remained a defining storyline tied to her time in Iowa City.
Caitlin Clark recently reflected on her Iowa career during an interview with John Mallory from Goldman Sachs. She addressed the persistent narrative surrounding her lack of an NCAA championship.
"People always try to say, like, aren't you mad, like you never won a National? I mean, like, yes," she said.
"But it doesn't keep me up at night. Because those are my best friends. And a lot of them don't even play basketball anymore. And you know, those times were like really all they had," she added.
At first, it was she and the Hawkeyes' legendary coach, Lisa Bluder, who thought they could reach the final four. But, with time, everybody followed in, and they made things happen on the court.
Clark admitted that, despite not having stars in the team, it was the bonding and chemistry that made them believe that they could win the title.
"You looked at our roster, it wasn't like players that were highly recruited. Like, it was a team that, like, really believed we could accomplish something. We hadn't been to the Final Four since 1992."
Clark emphasized that the bond between teammates and the fact that they reached back-to-back finals is important and valuable for her, even though they couldn't win them.
Some of Clark's teammates who helped her reach the finals twice were Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall. Martin and Marshall handled the team's defense. Meantime, Hannah Stuelke averaged 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game to lead the offense.
Alongside Clark, several other basketball icons also finished their collegiate careers without a national championship.
Other NCAA Legends Without An NCAA Title
Although Clark was not able to win the title, she isn't alone in this unfortunate situation; other legends have also not won the NCAA title despite coming close.
Lisa Leslie, who played at USC for four years, with a total of 2,414 points, 1,214 rebounds, and 321 blocked shots, was not able to win the title, remains a legend to this day.
Sabrina Ionescu also missed out on a title despite leading Oregon to three straight Final Fours.
Kelsey Plum, the second-highest scorer in NCAA history, also finished her career without a championship.
