Throughout the offseason, Breanna Stewart remained certain about her loyalty to the New York Liberty, pledging to stay in Brooklyn even before free agency began. And her recent comments displayed how comfortable she feels playing for the team.
The 31-year-old voiced her affinity towards the Liberty during a recent media availability. An X post by Myles Ehrlich on April 23, featured Stewart stating that there was no question regarding her renewal with the Liberty alongside Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones.
“Brooklyn is home. New York is home,” Stewart said. “We know last year didn’t go the way we wanted, and we want that to be different for this year and the next, and hopefully many more after that.”
All members of the 'Big 3' recently signed their renewals with the Liberty on similar max deals, a 3-year, $3.75 million contract. The trio did not opt for supermax contracts to leave room for new signings in the newly adjusted $7 million salary cap.
The veterans' sacrifice helped the Liberty land a monster signing in German-American power forward Satou Sabally. Meanwhile, Stewart joined the Liberty training camp on Thursday after a rather eventful offseason.
She first led Mist BC to a championship in Unrivaled in February, then stepped off the court to diligently fulfill her duties as vice president of the WNBPA, helping secure a better deal for the players’ union in the latest CBA.
Her on-court work didn’t end there, as she traveled to Spain and helped Turkish giants Fenerbahçe Opet capture the EuroLeague Women's title.
Now, Stewart aims to carry that momentum forward and win the biggest title of the season, something she already achieved alongside Ionescu and Jones two years ago.
And the first order of business comes in the form of a preseason game against none other than Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.
Breanna Stewart to be Featured in the Preseason Game Against the Indiana Fever
Stewart returned from overseas just two days before the New York Liberty training camp started, so there were doubts whether she would participate in any of the scheduled preseason games. But the 31-year-old cleared all doubts when she declared herself available for the games.
“Breanna Stewart confirmed to media today that she will be playing on Saturday vs the Fever,” women’s basketball insider Khristina Williams wrote on X.
Despite her offseason commitments, Stewart was in direct contact with the first-year head coach, Chris DeMarco, who believed Stewart did not miss a beat on the first day of camp.
“She’s in great shape already,” DeMarco said. “She’s a very high-IQ player, one of the best in the W, so she naturally does a lot of stuff we’re trying to do. … It was fast, she picked up on it really quickly.”
WNBA fans are sure to be in for an early treat as Breanna Stewart and the Liberty take on a healthy Caitlin Clark on a revamped Fever squad.
So, do you think Stewart will be able to take her side past the Fever to gain some positive momentum ahead of the new season?
