Breaking: Indiana Fever Make Key Call on Sophie Cunningham, per ESPN Sources

The Indiana Fever have locked in a key piece of their core. Veteran guard Sophie Cunningham is returning on a one-year deal, according to ESPN sources, solidifying the roster around Caitlin Clark for their 2026 championship run.
ESPN’s Alexa Philippou was the first to report on Sunday, April 12, that veteran guard Sophie Cunningham is returning to the Indiana Fever on a one-year deal, with financial terms still undisclosed.
This will be the 29-year-old's second season with Indiana after arriving from the Phoenix Mercury in a four-team trade on February 1, 2025, helping boost their playoff push.
The Indiana Fever were the sixth seed in the playoffs. They beat the Atlanta Dream and then lost to the Las Vegas Aces, who went on to win the championship.
Now that Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull are back, along with Caitlin Clark, for a full season, they are keeping their core together.
The Fever have also added more depth in free agency, bringing in forward Monique Billings and point guard Tyasha Harris.
Maybe Sophie Cunningham saw it coming, given her hilarious demand to Caitlin Clark just a day earlier.
Sophie Cunningham Fires Back at Clark and Hull
Recently, after Lexie Hull shared a TikTok with Caitlin Clark confirming her return to Indiana, CC dropped a playful comment tagging Sophie Cunningham, saying, "Hey, what's up, wyd."
It didn’t take long for the 29-year-old to reply, "The no invite is CRAZYYYYY!" before adding, "You two better make up for this horrible TikTok."
It seemed like the players already knew what was coming, and the team’s official confirmation of Sophie Cunningham’s return on Sunday morning was just the cherry on top.
Even Fever COO and General Manager Amber Cox expressed her excitement about Cunningham’s return, saying, "We are thrilled to have Sophie back with the Fever and are grateful for her commitment to return and build on what we started a year ago."
"Not only is Sophie one of the best three-point shooters in the league, but she is an exceptional teammate, both on and off the court," she added.
Now, with Lexie Hull and Sophie Cunningham returning, they’ll join Caitlin Clark again in 2026 as the trio looks to chase a WNBA championship together.
