“Best Player-Coach?”: Fans Erupt as Rori Harmon Reveals HC’s Pitch That Still Hits

Rori Harmon and Vic Schaefer's emotional embrace after their Elite Eight win said it all. The Texas duo is one of college basketball's best. Harmon has now revealed the powerful recruiting pitch from her coach that started their journey and has fans buzzing.
"He told me that I could start here. We can start together. ... He said I would be able to build a legacy here at the University of Texas." Harmon said.
Harmon and Schaefer have been together for five seasons in total, playing 156 games together. Knowing this is the last season they will be together, the duo has put in extra efforts to reach the mountaintop this season. The Longhorns are back at their second consecutive Final Four and are seeking their first national championship win since 1986.
“I prayed for that a long time last night to have that moment today with her,” Schaefer said Monday.
And they are right on track, for now. The Longhorns won their first four tournament games by an average of 35.5 points and now face fellow No. 1-seed UCLA Friday in Phoenix in the semifinals.
While different players came and went, the Houston native adapted her game and battled through knee injuries to become Schaefer's most important defense-focused guard in her final two years.
But that style of play has fit perfectly into the system Schaefer likes to run. “We're very similar in that way,” she said. “Like, we just are really focused on winning. We're very competitive. We like to do things right.”
Fans React to Rori Harmon's Words About Coach Vic Schaefer
Fans were all praises after hearing Harmon's relationship with the Longhorns coach, and were impressed by how she chose to build a legacy in Texas over time.
"Rori Harmon and Vic Schaefer's connection is easily one of the best player-coach bonds in college basketball. One fan gave his flowers to the duo.
And that's been evident from Harmon's journey. Harmon is one of the few players in college basketball these days to have played all five seasons in one program. It's why one fan added:
"Rori Harmon, that’s real loyalty talk right there. Vic Schaefer didn’t just recruit talent, he sold a vision… and that’s how programs get built, not just teams."
"Nothing like having someone that believed in you from day 1." One user shared his feelings.
"Rori choosing legacy over everything else… that’s leadership." Another fan echoed.
The player-coach duo would like to finish their fairytale run at this NCAA tournament with a hard-fought title win. But for now, they have to conquer the Bruins first.
