Azzi Fudd Leans on Paige Bueckers as UConn Eyes Another Title

Mar 22, 2026, 4:59 AM CUT

Azzi Fudd is all set to lead the UConn Huskies to their second straight championship in her final season, a story similar to which we saw just last year in the Geno Auriemma-led side.

To nobody's surprise, Fudd will be using Paige Bueckers' historic campaign with the Huskies last season as fuel to add further glory to an already legendary collegiate career.

With the NCAA tournament well and truly underway, Fudd told Overtime how her partner inspires her in what will be the final games we will watch the 23-year-old in UConn colours.

"Oh, I mean, she's someone that I look up to in so many different aspects, but the way that she just went about all of last year, especially the end, how she handled the expectations, the pressure, her mindset, how she was able to perform, be a great leader, great teammate through it all." Fudd said.

Bueckers dropped one of the most insane overall performances in not only UConn but also college history last year. She averaged 24.8 points per game in the tournament, with notable performances in the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight, where she scored 40 and 31 points, respectively.

After culminating a program record 105 points in the stretch of three games, she finished her collegiate career with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists in the National Championship game.

"And at the end of the day, still be herself. She didn't change at all. That is so impressive. So I definitely got to learn a lot from her. I'll be trying to, you know, be like her this month." Fudd added.

While the UConn Huskies hunt for a very possible championship No. 13 this season, Azzi Fudd will also be keeping a keen eye on April 13, when the WNBA Draft will be held. Fudd is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick, which would provide her with a direct pathway to reunite with her partner and former Huskies teammate on the Dallas Wings.

Will Azzi Fudd be a Good Fit in the Dallas Wings?

With the majority of the mock drafts placing Fudd in the top spot, it is looking more and more inevitable for Fudd to join alongside Bueckers in Dallas. But the question remains whether the "People's Princess" is the ideal choice for Dallas in a draft class filled with talent to the brink.

For starters, Fudd is having her career-best season after months on the sidelines due to constant knee injuries. She is averaging 17.7 points, 3 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game this season.

Not to mention the instant chemistry she and Bueckers have formed since their collegiate days will be displayed in full effect.

Moreover, the stat through which Fudd can elevate Dallas is through her three-point shooting prowess. Dallas is one of the worst teams in efficiency from outside the arc (30.4%) this season, and Fudd's 45% shooting accuracy from the three-point line could prove to be the game-changer.

While some critics have argued the need for bigs like UCLA's Lauren Betts or Spain's Awa Fam to improve Dallas' stagnant defence in the paint, the idea of Fudd and Bueckers linking together on court is intriguing, to say the least.
