Taylor Townsend’s 2026 Australian Open singles run came to an end as the sun set in Melbourne on Sunday.
The match was a golden opportunity for the 29-year-old, who made a surprise return to Grand Slam singles competition after being thrust into the main draw. This happened on the back of Marketa Vondrousova's withdrawal from the tournament due to ongoing shoulder issues.
Townsend failed to get past Australia’s Storm Hunter in the final round of qualifying. As the "lucky loser" walked into court no. 13 following her 6(6)-7(8), 2-6 loss on Thursday, it was time for an all-American showdown in Round 1.
Yet, despite showing flashes of brilliance, Townsend’s inability to convert break points became the main issue of the match. She was only able to convert 1 out of 10 break-point opportunities. In contrast, Baptiste didn't do much better with 3 out of 15. But she made the most of her chances on serve, firing 9 aces to Townsend’s 5 and winning 75% of her first serves.
Baptiste won the first set 6-3, but her tactical play was under pressure in set two as Townsend pushed to a tiebreaker and clinched 7-3. It was all up to the decider, where Townsend fell short again, mimicking the opening set's score.
Baptiste entered the match after snapping a five-match losing streak. Her “clever variety and tactical play were on full display,” the commentators noted following the match.

Townsend also faced a first-round exit in last year's Australian Open to Mexican player Renata Zarazúa.
Townsend will look ahead to doubles after the singles missed opportunity
As Townsend exits the singles category early, she will now turn her attention to the women's doubles with Czech partner Katerina Siniaková. The two are currently No 1 in women's doubles.
While her singles results at major tournaments in 2025 weren’t strong, Townsend has won two major doubles titles. One was at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and the other at the 2025 Australian Open, both with Siniaková.
The loss to Baptiste may sting for now, but for Taylor Townsend, the journey is far from over.
What are your predictions for her?
