Arizona State HC Opens Up on Decision to Sign Tennessee Transfer Ruby Whitehorn

A big roster move right before the March Madness was probably not on Arizona State’s 2026 list, but it ultimately happened.

The Tennessee Lady Vols dismissed Ruby Whitehorn in November 2025. And now, she’ll call Molly Miller’s Arizona State Sun Devils her new home.

Following Whitehorn's inclusion into the team, Miller spoke to On3. While highlighting Whitehorn’s potential as a player, the coach also brushed upon the Sun Devils’ gaming environment and work ethic.

"I’m here to help young people”, On3’s reporter Talia Goodman circulated Miller’s statement over X. The Sun Devils HC also mentioned, “Our culture gives Ruby an opportunity to grow, and I believe she can be the best version of herself in this environment."

Whitehorn also broke her transfer news through an Instagram post on February 20. It featured some photos of her practicing in her Sun Devils’ jersey, with the Arizona players. The one-word caption reading, “Grateful”, described her thoughts aptly.

In her last season with the Lady Vols, the 21-year-old racked up 11.1 points and 4.8 assists per game as a regular starter. In a stint with the Clemson Tigers during her initial two collegiate years, she scored 700 points.

So, her importance and role in the paint cannot be overlooked. But while Whitehorn is expected to start the ongoing season strongly with the Sun Devils, one question still lingers.

What Made Kim Caldwell Dismiss Ruby Whitehorn?

Despite her on-court performance, the 21-year-old was tangled in a series of legal charges in 2025. Which caused Caldwell and the front office remove her from the WBB roster.

The first blow came in August, when the 6’0 Guard was charged with two felonies. However, she pleaded guilty and was reinstated to the team. But another legal charge in October closed the door for a return.

“It is my responsibility to protect the high standards of this historic program”, Coach Caldwell made the final announcement following the event on November 2.

“In light of recent events, Ruby has been unable to reflect those standards, and I have made the difficult decision to dismiss her from our team. I love Ruby and will always be rooting for her, but my priority is to uphold the respected reputation of the Lady Vols”, she added.

Moving forward, Molly took Whitehorn under her wings and will be shaping her into the asset the Sun Devils need.
